    My understanding is that the Tungsten penetrators were almost as good as the DU ones, indeed I've seen arguments that they are equivalent. The US looked at going to the L/55 gun. It did give somewhat more muzzle velocity but the reason I heard was that it actually decreased on the move accuracy due to barrel flex and US doctrine was and is to shoot on the move where the Germans looked more at firing from stationary positions.
