Amish. I am the ambassdor afterall. Next thing you know, y'all will hit me up on my European spelling, AGAIN!
The Congress Hall is a gigantic 'white elephant' - the roof was never completed ; in the 1960s it was due to be used as a sports stadium, in the 1980s, a shopping complex. Both schemes fell through. As with nearly all Nazi-era buildings at Nuremburg, the standard of construction was poor. After years of neglect, the City of Nuremburg is now spending large amounts of money to maintain the relics as historic monuments. The Congress Hall now contains the 'Documentation Centre' which is a very good museum describing the Nazis rise to power and the consequences. here's a view of the other side of the building, taken over the ( drained ) Duitzendteich Lake ( note the brick construction; not quite as impressive as it looks on the front side ) ....
I was going to ask what it was being used for now. That has been answered. Was it suppose to be a semi-circle building?
Great photos again Martin, i wondered where you'd got to. A mate & I are planning to go and see a round of the DTM at the Norisring oneday. That way I can do a motorsport and WW2 weekend. Cheers for the photos.
Martin the documentation centre is a start and then off to the citys background archiv's where you will find a host of brilliant materials that were saved from the bombings and the Allies filtering through......a good spot is really just starting at the local tourist buro and asking a host of questions............but you can wait for the spring of 08 when you have more time for shopping I will be sending a friend living in Ansbach over there real soon besides wishing for one of the many original cookie tins full of goodies before they all disappear and their Bier isn't bad either
This is the greatest thing I've ever seen... Oh and the other pics are good too! But... food is better.
Trinkets? Surely this is Martin's new garden shed? "Oh it's just something I found lying on the ground..."
Interesting backyard implements to be sure to keep the neighbor kids out, I'm curious if Martin got to the top of one of these to view and take pics of the posted searchlight connections ? .............. if that was possible and legal
ok Martin a couple of quick questions then, the doorway is about what height ?,, the dark small windows were for ? 4 per side ?? ........... air vents < and the neighbor needs to clean up his leaves in his oversized big yard
The doorway is a generous height ; I'd say about 2 metres, maybe 2.5. I've no idea what the holes were for and can only guess that they were for cooling/ventilation purposes..... Here's a view of the 'end of the terrace', nearest to the Zeppelin Tribune....
As a footnote to this thread, I came across this shot of the 'Cathedral of Ice' searchlight-show at the Zeppelin Field....
That is a neat picture, almost like something you would see in Las Vegas. My second thought was, I would hate to pay the electric bill !
Actually - I don't think it was...! Riefenstahl's famous film was made at the 1934 Reichsparteitag, when the events centred on the Luitpoldhain ( the Zeppelin Field hadn't been built ). The lights came in '36 ( I think ), '37 and '38 and were the invention of Speer. The gigantic transformer house to drive the lights still exists ( apparently, today it houses an outlet of Burger King ! ) - I didn't have time to see it this time round.....
I thought I read somewhere that somebody wanted to make the site into a big soccer stadium, but I guess that didn't happen. Whatever happened to the nazi/Hitler sites in Munich? The Brown House, Hitler's apartments and the pubs, etc?
Nuremberg's team has their modern stadium on part of the old site. The Brown House, Hofbrauhaus, Hitler's apartment, the Osteria restaurant etc all still exist in Munich - but the Burgerbraukeller was demolished in the 1980s.....
Cool. Thanks for the info. I haven't been to Germany since 1975 but if I ever get another chance i'm going. I think I can get a military hop over there but I don't know about getting back. I'd love to go to Munich for Oktoberfest. I need to do some research. You have triggered my imagination with your great photos.
