I use my name just because I like the German language and I find the paratroopers to be interesting. Plus they used one of my favorite guns, the FG42, specifically for use by them.
I read The Coastwatchers by Eric Feldt when I was about 12-13 and immediately became enthralled by these men who volunteered to stay behind Japanese lines. I picked my screen name to honor these little known heroes.
good book. i have an out of print book by bruce adams called rust in peace. it's a photo book from the early 70's about pacific theatre relics and wrecks, and it prominently features the history of the coastwatchers. as for my screenname, it comes from a line in the watchmen graphic novel (it wasn't used in the movie). i've used it on various forums for close to ten years now. "delirious, I saw that hell bound ship's black sails against the yellow indies sky, and knew again the stench of powder, and men's brains, and war"
I ride Victory motorcycles and live in NC. I use this name on my motorcycle forums and thought it would be a good match on this forum as well.
Because I love panzers and the workhorse or Maintstay of the mighty unstoppable panzer armys is the mark4...........I am not a very creative person like Otto said.
I think that there is another very long thread asking the same question, and others inquiring about signatures and avatars.
Here's the thread. http://www.ww2f.com/counter-battery-fire/28022-what-inspired-your-screen-name.html
Thanks Lou, I looked and looked and couldn't find it. Well, while I was combing the archives, I kept getting sidelined on other topics to tell you the truth, sort of like getting lost in the library. I figured someone would dig it up sooner or later!
I got mine from Charlie Chaplin's movie, The Great Dictator. They changed Hitler's title from Der Fuhrer to Der Phooey. I liked it, and wasn't feeling very creative when I signed up.
I am aware of how generic it may seem in reflection, but the cool uniforms and "bad-boy" (Murderous) reputation of the Totenkopf division is what got me interested in WW2 and put me on the path to unwittingly stumble upon this place which has become such an important part of my young life (Call me a loser! )
Two things inspired me. One was a fall and winter reading up on Halsey, Mitscher, and McCain, and the deep water Atoll they all used for the 3rd/5th fleet. And, I like the movie "The Good Sheppard" (for some reason), and Matt Damon's ememy in the movie is a Russian spy code name "Ulysses". So I though Ulithi sounded similar.......and cool!
Very interesting thread, thaks for this. My username comes from the British rock band Iron Maiden. As I'm a huge fan of Iron Maiden I came across to this name since I found out that the figure that is in every Iron Maiden's album cover is named as Ed Hunter or Eddie. Number 76 represents my birth year. Iron Maiden Official Website
Phantom of the Ruhr was a name given to a Lancaster from 100 Squadron that completed 121 "ops" between June 11, 1943 and November 21, 1944. I already use the name for my Deviant Art profile, and decided to use it here.
