    why the mixed load?

stonewall - why the mixed load? i thing you are trying to be ready for anything but consider a few things. you have a 50% chance of having shot when you neew to reach out past 25 yds and of having a solid slug when shot might be the prefered load. ok you could rack and eject the wrong one but that takes time and makes noise. shot for places where overpenration might be a problem and slugs for everything else with a change of loads if and when conditions makes more sense and besides you will have 6 in strad of 3 of what you need

I know the first round is "buck"

I figure most folks will start running away, or at least back off, after the first round.. (I will then 'reach out' with the sabot)

If I miss with the sabot and they decide to come back, then the buck will greet them.

after 2 rounds of buck have been fired, most likely, if they have been 'winged' and slowed down just a bit, the next sabot will finish the job.

Plus if your attacker is on the other side of a door or wall, the first OOO buck round will soften it up a bit first. the sabot will go right through it, bringing lots of wood splinters with it.. I have a client that operates a range, this was his suggestion for home protection.

    Stonewall-
    loaded for bear :bang:

a blackbelt trumps a untrained man.a sword trumps a blackbelt.a gun of almost any kind trumps a sword.any rifle from the 1890s trumps any shotgun once we get out past 100 yards or so...shotguns and submachine guns work well if u expect to fight at very close quarters ie police and security forces .semi auto rifles beat all when the fight moves outdoors...note the military forces of the ENTIRE WORLD....THE RIFLE U CAN DROP IN THE MUD,SNOW ,SAND or whatever and pick it up and it still shoots....AND THE WINNER IS....mr kalashnikov...thunderous applause...p.s. the m16 still sux im afraid...

i saw a thing in popular mechanics ..infantry rifle of tomorow.the gun will fire a mini grenade like 20mm that can be adjusted by the soldier to airburst over a foxhole .or enter a building ,then explode.at $10000 a unit they are not cheap.the writers claim that it will be a breakthrough war winning technology like metal cartriges/repeating arms.my dad ,an old ammo oficer likes the m14.hackworth wanted the us army to switch over to the zillions of ak47s that were found in iraq...har har,fat chance...ak and m14 are what 50 years old.?..what then is the best military rifle around right now?anyone....

stonewall..i just remembered a good storie bout moseby.u prolly already know it..mosbey,s small cavalry unit is trapped in a culdesac by a much larger union cav force.moseby figures its the bitter end...suddenly to the rebels great delight ,the union comander orders his boys to "draw sabres"moseby grins and orders his boys to "draw colts"the rebs blast their way through the blue coats and escape virtualy intact...another illistration of the knife to a gun fight lesson writ large.i think moseby was heard to observe the federals might as well have "drawn cornstalks" for all the good it did them.....p.s. remember the words to that great james boys song from the 70,s?...rebel souls....

if only it were that simple

woody. too bad life isn't that simple. instead of a nice neat chain of bettter and worse we are stuck with a mess. no weapon is always better than any other weapon, each has +s & -s in different situtations. most martial artists i know fear a knife more than a gun at close range. a jo staff will beat a sword given equal skill levels but may lose to a knife. there's way too many varaibles involved to place any weapon on top. a true warrior uses what is best for the job at hand or whatever he has if there is no choice. sure its fun to argue about which gun is better and all that. thak your beloved AK. true a fine weapon but how many guys got killed or warned by that awful click clack as you release the safety or how about the strange motions it takes to insert a fresh mag? that takes a lot longer than most rifles. then forget hitting much beyond 250 m, neither the gun nor the round is up to that. an AK is fine for half trained troops that lack the means to support proper maintance but in return you have a crude inaccurate gun. OK the M16 does need extra care, so what? anyone unwilling to care fr his weapon deserves to ehd up KIA. hell the MP-5 is well respected everywhere but give it to some smuck that doesn't clean it and in short order it'll be an funny shaped club.

i guess im thinkin in terms of the collapse of law an order world...in the right now mean streets of L.A. world ..a colt comander in ur coat pocket would rule all...god didnt make man equal..col. colt made man equal..i can reach an thumb my saftey as fast as most fellas can unsheath a bowie...uh huh ...u lose..could a stranger standin behind me at the bus stop stick me ...well of course.my wife could poisen me too ,it has nothin to do with this thread tho, right?
if its no cops an no phones ,then there aint no bruce lee or david bowie gettin within a hundred yards of my ppl.cause im gonna make him lie down with my ak.then he,s gonna get trussed up like a hog..an if he dont do as he is told ..well sry then accute lead poisining...try sneakin up on a platoon of khmere rouge with ur black belt an bokken staff...guns always win in real life ..i know in movies kung fu an shuriken stars win ,,but i was thinkin of like real life stuff.i didnt know about the loud saftey clack tho ..thats not good...lol

I think what lynn1212 means is that once you can make a gun point anywhere but at you, it is harmless. You only need to knock it out of the way and strike.

I'm a bit worried by your idea of what the world would be like if civilization were to end. At no time in human history, no matter how great the lack of control from above, have people started randomly killing each other just because they wouldn't be punished for it. This would probably only happen if everyone was guarding their property with itchy trigger fingers, shooting anyone who approached - i.e. you, with your AK-47.

    yes, in the movies ,the hero just heel kicks the bad guys gun out of his hand.in real life a sudden move towards a gun muzzle is almost always a bad idea. i agree that in a civil collapse most crimminal thugs mostly just rob and loot.the thing is when theres no cops ,thugs will do pretty much what they want.a woman who was raped after the tsunami asked her attackers why they did this to her...they replied"because we can..."as for casual wholesale murder just for the fun of it,read up on the sack of jerusalum,kiev,bagdad ,nanking{insert city name here..}

Those examples all involve a regular army, most of them with highly trained and experienced professional soldiers. These men are in no way comparable to anarchists. In fact most of the massacres you mention were consciously ordered to take place by generals who thought of them as good examples for everyone else still resisting.

As to close combat, I agree that you must never bring a sword to a gunfight unless you enjoy the heroism of such events as the Charge of the Light Brigade.

My view on personal weapons is personal preference, you cant just choose 1 singular pistol ect.... some one might choose to use a .45 automatic and others including myself would rather use a .38spl revolver.

I suppose that, for most people, guns are the best option.
Using knives, jo-sticks, even fists, requires a fair amount of skill (and strength); and even then you put yourself at risk, and might run into a stronger or more skilled opponent - or just get unlucky.
Guns are great because any fool can use one with minimal training. Admittedly you ain't gonna have the best accuracy etc, but if you're reasonably close, you'll be fine. Plus having a gun pointed at them would make most people highly unlikely to cause trouble.
If they can still kick your arse, then you are unlikely to have been better off with anything less than a bodyguard anyway. ;)

there was a time when endless practice and fitness made for a practically unbeatable duelest...in the age of swords ,a skilled fencer could call out almost anyone with impunity.to accept the challenge was a virtual death sentence, for a gentelman to refuse was almost worse....matched dueling pistoles changed all that .the portley dr.,or aged barrister could with a few hours practice a month, accept the invitation of the most deadly blade in the hussars...guns made the endless training of the swordsman a bunch of pointless calesthetics. the sword bearing class of japan hated guns so much they just plain outlawed them...it worked for awhile.

There was no fencing in Japan, fencing developed only in Europe as a reaction to the development of plate steel armour for Knights. This armour could not be cut by any sword, so the Knights had to learn to stab very accurately into armpits or elbows or necks, as well as learn to parry such blows from the enemy. However, at this time firearms were already beginning to appear in Europe.

It is interesting that you saw the same issues surrounding the crossbow, which back in the 11th Century was banned by Papal decree as a terrible weapon of mass destruction that would destroy mankind (ie: a weapon that allowed the humblest, most ignorant specimen of humanity to be able to kill anybody in battle, from the king down, with only 5 miutes of training).

european knights hated the crossbow for the same reason the samurai hated the firelock .the velocity of the missle was indefensable .also the most simpleminded plowboy could be trained to shoot one in a few days.
