I believe that the Brandenburg Regiment/Brandenburgers were a well known unit. I know that they were called commandos but does that consider them infantry or is it considered different than infantry?

The Grossdeutschland Division was also an elite infantry unit which was considered one of the "premier" divisions of the German regular army.

I read the title as referring to the Infantry Divisions - not the parachute infantry, motorised infantry, panzer or Panzer grenadiers..

I have always been partial to the 90th Light Division of the Afrika Korps. Of course the fact that I was the only student to get an A in my German History course (1870-1990) at LSU while writing a paper on the Afrika Korps helps!

The 1st Infantry Division was one of the first divisions of the Wehrmacht during the period Hitler's rearmament. It served in both theaters of the war west and east. Some of its major battles was Leningrad, and Krivoy Rog.

Post war General Blumentritt told Liddell Hart that he thought that the German infantry of Ww2 was less steady under fire than that from Ww1. Other Generals disagreed.
