    hau ab

I think that is how it is spelt at least.

Why does that comment only come from an American, In NATO the yanks always come out with it. It is not until you come out with something such as that that people talk about you.

Sits waiting quitely to be censored.

Well, maybe not all Americans are the same. Phelps has a problem with people speaking languages he doesn't understand on an international forum. It's perfectly reasonable, however, maybe he should be happy that the common language here is English so that in normal conversation he doesn't have to adapt to foreign languages, like some.

Hey Skua.I'm really sorry for screwing up your topic.I'm quite sarcastic and have a tendancy to inject a little humor when it may not be appreciated.I seem to have blown this one out of the water.

    Sorry!

No need to be sorry for that ! :)

It was bound to end up in yet another linguistic debate ( which we all took part in btw ). ;)

Hey GP, what the heck does "hau ab" means ? Nothing dirty I hope. :-? ;)

    Get lost.

I believe, maybe some good German speakers can clarify. I have never seen it written but that is how it is pronounced.

Yes I know it is not all Americans but I have only heard it from them. As I have said many times I have nothing against them but some do hack me off. No offence intended Danyel. As his anger came from a couple of remarks in German. Had I made my post in English then the funny side would IMHO have been lost.

I don't think there is a litteral translation but it is the nearest to **** off the Germans have.

I didn´t recognize it as German, I though it was Latin or Dutch.

"Hau ab" literally translates into "chop off", the closest expression in English would be "cut it out" I guess.

people! We are really gwetting off topic here...maybe someone should create another topic for lanuages someplace else...

back to topic, what woould happen to the people of the british colonies, like singapore and far east? India? would they be able to defend themselves against the japanese army? and will the royal navy surrender their ships to germany under political pressure?

Some words don't literally translate you have to look at the context it is used in, some of my german friends would use hau ab in the same context that the Brits would use **** off.

I'm sure 'pule av' doesn't mean to you what the literal translation would be.

P.S. I think it is correctly spelt.

    A valient effort ray243!

The fate of the colonies depends on how Britain goes down.

    1) If we simply surrender, so do the colonies. These are now under German control, and the Japanese would have to very carefully consider whether or not to attack.
You could end up here with the bizarre AT of Nazi Germany and the USA Allied against the Japanese!!! :D

    2) If the UK is taken by force, the colonies, and all the fighting forces not destroyed would fend for themselves. Most would be directed from Canada, where the Government would have fled. However, they would obviously be much less able to put up a decent fight without Britain's backing (even just psychologically)

    3) If we simply made peace with the Germans, that again is tricky. If the Japanese attack us, technically Germany would have to declare war on us again. I don't think Germany would be too happy over that. The Japanese would probably come under heavy pressure not to bother.

The Japanese needed those colonies more than the Germans did. It just depends on how far Hitler is willing to compromise.

IMHO - if Britain surrendered, or even just made peace, Germany would include the breakup of the Empire in the treaty - handing back most of the Colonies to their inhabitants. Germany scores a huge propaganda victory (and the goodwill of the American public ;) ), and also leaves the door open for the Japanese to gain their 'South East Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere' without trouble.

That's just too bad to be true, and scarily realistic; after all, the decolonization process had started decades ago in some areas, I'm sure most parts of the Empire would have no trouble accepting local independence!

Most had resources, but more importantly Japan did want an Empire above all else.
