Hi Gromit, Jeff, G/ That would have been nice to see but perhaps they never thought of converting T-34s for such purpos? Jeff, I have not seen Avatar but, I do like the idea of the ability to make grand-scale epic movies using that kind of special effects. Im not a fan of CGI but I would support seeing it used in order to make more war movies ;-))
Probably came down to budget. Recreate some reasonable Tiger mockups vs slapping some crosses on a bunch of M-48's. It's that extra that separates the good from the bad: Tora Tora Tora - Good. Battle of the Bulge - Bad.
I would vote for an accurate 'Midway' movie that included the Marine and Army aviation contributions. Sad that even today, I think that the best video representation would have to be the section from the '80s 'War and Remembrance' that dealt with Midway. Inaccurate as it was, they at least attempted to dress up the carrier with some antiaircraft guns (wrong types, but what the heck).
A movie like Midway is an ensemble cast. That was a cast of leading men. It had "The Longest Day" disease. Why was Band of Brothers probably the most outstanding WWII production ever? No one in it was really a huge "he-man" type of star.
