Oh, you want business? You like the looks of a tank that says, mess with me and you'll be in enough trouble to last three lifetimes?

    Oh YEAH...

Yes, they can be added to the Tiger I for business like looks. The Panther was too elegant looking to look mean.

I'm sure that Allied Tankers didn't spend time talking about how cute tanks were. For us, saying things like that is all fun and games. For the people who actualy served in WWII, it was an entirely different story.

That’s an unfair generalization. The Allies had a great many Tankers who were uncommonly fearless. Sergeant Pool, for example, had no fear of the Germans. In fact, he was convinced that he could take on the entire German army with his Sherman M4A1 76mm.

Where was this? Could you give me a time frame and location and I'll try and figure out if he was up against the cream of the German Panzer Divisions or not. I'm not being facetious by the way. I'm interested.

I'm sure if he came up against Schwere Panzer Rgt Bake* in Feb 1944 he would have felt differently (not that the Sherman 76mm was around then).

    * Schwere Pz Rgt Bake was a special unit that had 34 Tiger Is and 46 Panthers.

Danyel, I don't think any of the remarks were made with the serious idea that Allied tankers contemplated the ethics of the enemy's armour before engaging it. Of course there is no such thing as the beauty of a thing that tries to kill you. But taking it that seriously all the time would make topics such as these impossible! You have to be able to see things in perspective here.

And what exactly are you getting at?

Pool commanded three different tanks, all Shermans: one M4 or M4A1 (exactly which is not known, but since Pool was a top tanker and given some "perks" by the regimental staff, probably an M4A1), one later model M4A1 with 76mm gun and "Cullin Device", and a second M4A1 76. All were named "In the Mood".

258 vehicles is quite impressive!

A mix of APCs, Assault guns & Tanks, going by the article.
Did the German scores also go by 'vehicles'?

Interesting stuff thanks. I remember reading about this guy before although I couldn't remember the name. I was first astonished because I thought it said he had a tank kill score of over 200 but it's all types of vehicles such as tanks, personnel carriers trucks, armoured cars, probably jeeps (Kubels and Schwimms). Still an interesting couple of accounts. :D

The Panzer aces such as Witmann, Carius, Barkmann, Egge etc went solely on tank/TDs put out of action for their score totals. Hit's didn't count. Anti tank guns went on another score list and so did softskins such as personnel cariers, trucks, armoured cars etc. These didn't count towards the total TANK kill score. On many occassions the softskins were not added up as there were probably too many. :D

Well, he may not have the highest score of actual tanks, but it's bloody impressive none the less.
    1) achieved in only 80 days
    2) on the Western Front, which was not really the most target-rich for Allied tankers!
