If you can get hold of them. the three volumes by Paul Carell ( Hitler's War On Russia, Scorched Earth, and Bildband ) have many excellent B&W and colour photos.
I agree that Carell's Der Russlandkrieg presents the best overall balanced collection of Eastern Front photos in one book, as least from the German side. It covers all three fronts, with most photos focused not surprisingly on the infantry, but also includes a fair share of armor and artillery; the one area of weakness I think is the air war, which gets little coverage in this book. It also has a good selection of photos illustrating the "tail" of the Wehrmacht, as well as some stunning color photos, as has been mentioned - get it !
Another remarkable book is 'The Onslaught - The German Drive To Stalingrad' with a foreword by Max Hastings ( Sidgwick & Jackson, London 1984 ). This contains 150 previously-unpublished colour photographs by official German war photographers. The photos are similar in quality to those in the Carell books and include some photos actually taken inside Stalingrad.
"THe Great Patriotic War in Photos and Stills" The Voice of Russia ( THE GREAT PATRIOTIC WAR IN PHOTOS ) Which I am not sure if they are still in print and are probably not available outside of Russia. I got my copies-there is a book for every year of the GPW-from the Russian embassy about a dozen years ago. Some artistic liberties which I HOPE are OK to post; JeffinMNUSA
PLATZ DER LEIBSTANDARTE THE-PANZER-GRENADIER- DIVISON "LSSAH" AND THE BATTLE OF KHARKOV JANUARY-MARCH 1943 by george nipe and remy spezzano contains 516 duotone photos.IMHO this book is a perfect example of the eastern front, if you can get it, mind you it ain't cheap
take your pick, the Carrell volumes are unbeatable the Patriotic war I found so so with funny propaganda captions but that also is the case for several WW 2 German editions in my collection. if you start covering the Older Munin-Verlag titles on the W-ss and the Podzun on the Heer you have some pretty stirring imagery to look forward too. I know one of our forum members Falkeeins has translated several newer Wehrmacht volumes so there still seems to be a plothera of possible "new" imges to choose from in that regard
I have a paperback copy of this book and it doesn't appear to have any photos. I have not had a chance to read it yet buy maybe I should get a different copy. How many photos were in there?
Horst Scheiberts Deutsche Pz.Grenadier 39-45 isn't bad either, pics are small and so are the captions, some interesting Ost front footage though. The book has been produced in several editions since its first Podzun/Pallas release.
