Hi Wtid45, if you guys have a Wal-Mart somewhere near ya-that's where you can find some great deals on some of Dukes movies. A few months ago, I bought the Special Edition for Rio Bravo-which was priced at about $15.00. Recently, I saw it there for $9 bucks.

Those are some great movies that you listed. I don't have a copy of Hellfighters and McLintock---yet.

Miguel, check Dodge City out. It's been released both as a single movie and also with a collection of five Flynn movies. I THINK it was in the 1st Errol Flynn Signature Collection. If not, then it was part of the 2nd Errol Flynn Signature Collection. Anyway, it's a very good Western.

Hi Wtid45, heh heh, we'll have to make her change her opinions. ;-)) I have a good friend who lives in a small town in the State of Illinois, and this guy has Duke movies on all day long. When he first met his wife, she hated Duke and his movies. After watching him in several, and I think it was after watching: Rio Grande, that made her change her mind about Duke. You might want to buy a copy of: The Quiet Man, and ask her to watch that one-it should help "soften" her feeling about Duke. The Quiet man also has Maureen O'Hara (his love interest and sister to), Victor McLaglen (who is his chief rival, on going to Ireland) and finally, it has Ward Bond, as an Irish Catholic (or) Protestant Priest.

I think the great "fight scenes" were hilarious. By the way, the areas they filmed this movie in, have preserved soem of the places where TQM was filmed. Also, I just heard from a friend Emmanuel who lives near that area, that someone opened a Pub that is of the same name and same looks, as that of the Pub seen in the movie.

    Hi Krieg, Wtid45,

Krieg, that it definately was. Did you know that in order for the Studios to fund this movie, that John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara first had to make Rio Grande. BTW, both films were highly successful.

Wtid45, is your wife a fan of Johnny Horton? and Stewart Granger? if so, ask her to watch: North To Alaska. I think she'd love that one. Also, Donovans Reef is another she might enjoy ;-))

PS, I almost forgot, Fabian is in that movie as well.

The Quiet Man...one of my personal favorite movies...ever. A true classic by John Ford, who won the Oscar for Best Director for this film. McLaglen was nominated for Best Supporting Actor.

Carl...You left out the great performance by Barry Fitzgerald as Michaleen Flynn! Fitzgerald was brilliant (as usual) and stole every scene he was in (again, as usual)!

Mary Kate: Could you use a little water in your whiskey?
Michaleen: When I drink whiskey, I drink whiskey and when I drink water, I drink water.

    :D:D:D:D:D

First, I do like John Wayne and think he was a good actor, especially in some of his lesser known movies like "The Quiet Man", and "The Wings of Eagles". For several years, I lived in Newport Beach, Calif. and John Wayne had a house, and kept his yacht, the "Wild Goose", across the channel from where I lived. I actually met the man a couple of times as his doctor had an office in the same building as my doctor. I ran into Wayne a couple of times when he was fighting lung cancer. I thought he was a decent sort and a nice guy without the well known Hollywood "celebrity ego".

    As a public service, here is alist of his movies;

    1925 - Brown of Harvard
    1926 - The Great K&A Train Robbery
    1926 - Bardelays The Magnificent

    Hi Wtid45, DevilsAdvocate,

Great films all. However, with True Grit and Rooster Cogburn, I liked the Cogburn movie more since I can't stand Kim Darby. I think Kate Hepburn was great in that movie.

DevilsAdvocate, great movies. I have about 1/2 or so of them on DvD. Some of the above--especially the earliest ones-you can only get a copy of, if your a member of the AFI and or thatFilm Preservation Sociate (I forget it's actual title at this time.) Anyway, a good friend of mine is a lifetime member of both sites and as so, he is privvy to a copy on DvD, anything he wants. I'm thinking of joining those Orgs after making my move and getting setteled.

Also, if you go to: JWMB - The Original John Wayne Message Board! there is a guy by the name of William Brooks who happened to have been an extra in several of Dukes films including: She Wore A Yellow Ribbon and Fort Apache. This guy also was in a few of James Stewarts Westerns. Anyway, he lives near Eager, Arizona, and helps run the 26 Bar Ranch-which Duke co-owned for many years. Bill is a great guy to know.

    Hi CE,

Yeah, I was aware that there are a lot of early films that are pretty hard to acquire. A friend of mine is a film historian and has a personal library of over 9,000 titles. Most are now on DVD's but a few are still in the original media. I love visiting him because we watch old films for hours and he gives me the inside story on the actors, directors, writers, etc. Most people never hear about the funny, strange, sad things that went on behind the scenes of these movies. My friend, BTW, thinks John Wayne was one of the better actors of his day, and lists him as one of the thirty, or so, greatest actors of all time.

Wow DA, that's a lot of movies!! I wish I had that kind of cash! My problem is though, I'd never go outside at all! I'd just be sittin' around watching the Duke!

Well, I've known this guy since my high school days and he eats, breathes, and sleeps movies; he is certifiably NUTS about them. He makes his living writing books about Hollywood and the actors and actresses from it's earliest days until the present. He can therefore write off the cost of the movies because they are, in essence, part of his profession.

Hey Carl i agree about rooster being better the duke, and hepburn really bounce of each other in that film and it is probably why i remember it more so than True grit.Having decided to buy The longest day next i went to woolworths yesterday and in the dvd sale bin i found a 4 dvd set containing The big trail,North to alaska,The commancheros, and the undefeated all for just £7.00:cool: so me buy:D. Sat down and watched North to alaska brilliant! again saw this as a kid and it did not disapoint the duke can swing a punch and be funny the scene when stewart granger is with capucine in the honeymoon cabin waiting for the duke to blow is classic and i still got three more films to watch then back on the hunt for more films from the above list.
