    Hi RAy, Gordon,

Ray, same here. Ward Bond fit the lead and seeing him in the lead first made anything John McIntire do-null and void-though he is enjoyable to watch in other roles.

Heh heh, Gordon, ill not hold it against you mate ;-)) One wonders what Duke, Paul Fix and the others were thinking when they signed up for that stinker?

Great job on locating some images from that rarely seen Serial. Its on DvD now, but not restored unfortunately. Noah Beery Jr, who playes his crew chief, gets killed off in the first episode.

Now I will know you have the magical touch if you can find pics of him in these three: The Hurricane Express (another Serial) I forget the name of his other Serial? and also from the movie: I Cover the War. I Cover the War is one of the rarest of rare Duke movies shown.

Hi Ray, Skipper, first ill make a comment to Skipper.

Rio obo was one of those few Duke movies I get to see while growing up. The TV stations in our area only played the following Duke movies: Rio Lobo, Rio Brave, Rooster Cogburn, True Grit, Cahill US MArshall, The Alamo, The Green Berets, The Alamo, Chisum, The Shootist, Big Jake, The Longest Day and maybe one or two others. I didnt get to see most of his earlier films like: The Flying Tigers, They Were Expendable, Hondo, Stagecoach, Allegheny Uprising, Fort Apache, Rio Grande, he Horse Soldiers etc etc-till I was at least 15.

Ok Ray, here goes it ;-))

    1) Pic is just a studio publicity shot.

    2) The War Wagon w/ Kirk Douglas, Keenan Wynn, Robert Walker Jr, and Bruce Cabot.

    3) Pic 3 is a private photo and I THINK is one that Pat Stacey (his personal biographer) took. It was used in one of her books.

    4) Classic fight scene near end of Rio Bravo. Duke is w/ Walter Brennan (Stumpy) and "Colorado" and is providing cover from the building they were originally in and Dean Martin just "took out" Claude Akins and Gonzales-Gonzales, is helpinig out by firing his useless shotgun from the same building that "Colorado" is also in.

Ward Bond was in the movie but killed off early by one of the badguys.

    5) Duke as: "the Ringo Kid" in: Stagecoach. The pretty gal is Claire Trevor ;-))

And of course Skipper picture is of Duke, Christopher Mitchum (Tuscarora) and Dean Smith (Bide) who is also a Rodeo Star and currently lives in Bandera, Texas) and they of course are in: Rio Lobo-which is a mostly post Civil War Western. Also in the movie is: Edward Faulkner (as a Yankee Cavalry Officer) Jorge Rivero as Tuscaroras former Commanding Officer) and of course the ever so great character actor: Jack Elam-as Tuscaroras adoptive Father. Oh and: Victor French is one of the head evil guys as: former Sergeant Major Igorman, and Mike Henry as the evil Sheriff.

One of my favorite lines from that movie was an improvised one by Jack Elam which is: "He's at another gate looking for Saint Peter". :))

my four favorite movies and some of my original first generation colts,FWIW John wayne's first colt was a 45 colt serial,151284 made in 1893 ,well within the black powder era, this ivory gripped colt was used in a lot of movies, calibers as 38-40,44-40 and 32-20 where also used , John was also the owner of several other colts ,the colt's used in the shootist are his personal guns ,two nice engraved single actions that where presented to him in the fifties and engraved on the backstrap J.WAYNE

    Cheers RAy, Pierre.

Ray, too true on Jeff Hunter. Also, I think his best role was in The Searchers, then probably Sergeant Rutledge and then Hell To Eternity.

First Duke pic-Unkn. Ive only seen about half of his movies. That one would take a load of research to do for me to try figuring it out ;-))

Next is True Grit. I never cared for Kim Darby as she was VERY annoying in said movie. Funny though, she always reminded me of that annoying kid in Shane-always hollering Shane, Shane Come Back. Grrr, I always felt like I wanted to bop that kid on the top of his head with a Mallot. BTW, Roosted Cogburn, was the sequal to True Grit and I thought Catherine Hepburn was a much much better co-star.

Next is a classic shot of Lee Marvin (Liberty Valance) James Stewart (on his knees) and Duke (the man who shot) in: The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. Actually, the man who shot him was actually Woody Strode ;-))

Hi Pierre, well said and great collection of Pistolen and movies ;-)) Did you know that there are other Duke commemoratives out-like the John Wayne M1-Garand, Duke Colt .45and Duke M1-Carbine. I think the Garand is something like $1,500??? cant remember for sure and is out of my price range at this time. Oh and, they also have a Duke 1894 Winchester 30-30, and a Duke Greener Shotgun. Now that Greener is oen shotgun I wouldnt mind having ;-))

Your so correct on The Shootist. Even though that movie wasnt originally meant with him in mind as the Star, that movie was so tailor-made for him :-( I look at it as a great monument to his memory ;-) I like the montage of earlier Duke appearances that they used at the beginning of that movie. Also, the first guy he shoots at the beginning of the movie (who tried to rob him of his wallet) is none other than Gregg Palmer-who is better know as: "Fatty" in: Big Jake ;-)) Gregg Palmet was at Dukes 100th Birthday celebration in Winterset, Iowa-Dukes Birthplace and place of residence for 6 years. He and also Edward Faulkner, both did voice impressions fo Duke and sounded so much like Duke ;-))

Its to hard for me to pick even just four-favorite Duke movies but, a few of my favorites include: Stagecoach, Allegheny Uprising, Sand of Iwo Jima, The Alamo, Hondo, Rio Bravo, El Dorado, Rio Lobo, Big Jake, Jet Pilot, Rio Grande, Fort Apache, The Green Berets, Red River, Thw War Wagon, Undefeated............... and on and on and on and not necessarily in the listed order either. The only Duke movie I disliked is: The Conquerer. Why he made hat stinker? any guess is as good as one I can conger up ;-)

    Hi Pierre, Ray,

Pierre, You have great taste in movies. Ive a bunch of his early Westerns too. I also have all three of his Serials as well, The Three Musketeers-where he is friends with three Legionnnaires, anothern he was a stunt Flyer in one predominently featuring a train-which is called: The Hurricane Express, and I forget what the 3rd serials name is but can easily find out if I get the chance to visit IMDB? ;-)) Also, if you dont have many of his movies outside of the Westerns, let me suggest the following to get: Jet Pilot, Sands of Iwo Jima, Back To Bataan, They Were Expendable, The Fighting Seabees, Operation Pacific, The Flying Tigers, The Flying Leathernecks, The Alamo (more considered a War Movie than a Western) The Green Berets, and since you have many of his early Westerns, some of the early ones I like the most are his Three Mesquiteers Westerns where he played Stony Brooke. He did 8 of those and there were some 36 or so Three Mesquiteers movies in the entire series. I would love to see a complete box set of these released-providing they have not yet been released? ;-)) There were many many Western stars who made up the trio ;-)) Also, for good early Duke Westerns. I like Telegraph Trail, Haunted Gold, Neath Arizona Skies etc.

Ray, I did notice that the name was in the pic-but only after I had already posted on it ;-)) Its a bad habit of mine to let the eyes falll on the Chief Actors first before looking at the details in the pics ;-))

Im currently looking for some more great Gary Cooper pics and I would like more from Springfield Rifle-which I do have one sill from that movie, which shows Coop after his Court-martial, and im looking for some from his comedy western-Along Came Jones-which also has William Demarest-as his pal, and Dan Duryea, as the Badguy-which is normal for Duryea.

Oh and, I GOTTA get some for: Winchester 73, which is my favorite James Steware Western. I never tire seeing that one either. Classic Millard Mitchell, Dan Duryea, Stephan McNally, Will Geer, Jay C. Flippen, VERY EARLY appearances by: Rock Hudson (as an Indian) James Best and Tony Curtis as Yank Soldiers) and also includes more greats like: John McIntire, Will Geer (as Wyatt Earp) Charles Drake and I cant think of the main lady's name at the mo.

Just thought of her name: Shelly Winters is the pretty Dame ;-)) James Best and Tony Curtis are the only cast members that I can think of who are still living.
