Hi Ray, Dustin, Ulithi, Jason, Ray, those new pix are classics all. Fort Apache is my top favorite of the John Ford Cav trilogy. Pic 1) is as they were being inspected (and warned) by the post Sergeant Major (Ward Bond) O'Roarke, to behave at the post NCO dance and also NOT to spike the punch with Whiskey. I love that scene and the music involved. Also, did you know that Henry Fonda was quite the great Ballroom Dancer-the man moved with grace. Pic 2) Is just after the four Sergeants (a pre-Sam Fuller and WWII Four Horsemen) got busted for not destroying Meechams "Frontier Whiskey" in the manner that Col Thursday had ordered. Next is a classic Harry Carey Sr pose. I do not know which movie its from but ive seen it used in books before. Oh and, thankfully his Son is alive and doing well. Did you also know that he is maried to Paul Fix's Daughter ;-)) Tony Curtis in his Prison Escape movie. I never have had a chance to watch it all the way from start to finish but, I thought teaming him with Sidney Poitier, was a blast. Also having Austrian Actor and a favorite of mine: Theodor Bikel, as the Southern Sheriff chasing them-is classic in itself. Next is a studio shot (for the movie: She Wore A Yellow Ribbon) which I like but not near as much as Fort Apache and Rio Grande. L-to-R Duke, Harry Carey Jr, Ben Johnson and John Agar. Dustin, some of his 1930s movies, as well as Serials, are among my most favorite of his stuff. You really do get to see him transformed from a nobody, to a top "A" list star that he was. His three serials were excellent for what they were. The Three Musketeers, Shadow of the Eagle and The Hurricane Express. The Three Musketeers is not to get confused with a series of eight movies he made with Ray "Crash" Corrigan and Max Terhune-called: The Three Mesquiteers - in which I think some 40- 42 Three Mequiteers were made. Hi U/ Great war movie TWE was ;-)) As for that Professor, well, all he did was trade sour Grapes for sour Apples and seems a bit jealous of Dukes fame and fortune. As far as American indians go-they loved him. Not only were real Native American indians used in the Ford/Duke and many Westeerns, but Duke did a lot for their causes. If remember the story corectly? a tribe of Indians honored Duke by giving him some Kachin (SP?) Dolls. Duke then started collecting them. I THINK these Dolls were given to him and or made by the Hopi Indian tribe. Seems to me that that professor didnt know his _sshole from a hole in the ground ;-)) Buit, at least "WE" know the truth ;-)) Jason mi Amigo ;-)) heh heh, after all, "WE" gotta win you back over to THIS site mate ;-)) The story is true though, I remember it was during the Summer-so school was out and I had loads of free time on my hands-and everytime I saw the movies listed, I watched both Hondo and The Big Red One. The first time I saw Hondo, was when HBO played it. From the first sht showing Duke walking, in dust-covered clothes and carrying his saddle in one hand and his Winchester .30-30 in his other and while being followed by his Dog-named: Dog, I KNEW that that movie was going to be an excellent one. I was very pleased to see some familiar faces in it including oldie but goodies like: Paul Fix and Ward Bond, but also got to see Leo Gordon-(the badguy) who was also the boys Father that he ran out on. I was shocked to see a pre-Marshal Mat Dillon of Gunsmoke fame--aka--James Arness, in the movie as well. At that time, I didnt know who Michael Pate was though I had sen him in several movies (unknowingly) like: Father Goose and Major Dundee. Pate played Vittorio-the Apache Indian Chief-and did one hell of a great job in doing so I might add. Sadly, he recently passed away. Australia gives us some great actors from time-to-time. The Angel and the Badman isnt a top favorite of mine---yet-though I loved Gail Russell too. I still have to give it more time to sprout and it will become a favorite of mine. I ued to say the samething about movies like: Gunfight At the OK Corral, Hign Noon, Winchester '73, The Train and From Here To Eternity. Now days, when I see these played, I like em all more and more with every viewing-if thats possible? ;-)) Angel and the Badman WILL catch up in time ;-))
Great shots ray, also the first of these Fort Apache pics, is one I have. Notice Duke is with all the Officers and Noncoms in that depression. That is a near the and not seen here yet end of the movie scene in which Duke was NOT in ;-)) Had he been in that scene? hed have been killed too. PS, Bill is going to send me more of his Stills soon as he has time and ill send them your way ;-)
cheers, carl..some more of the duke..and friends from many of his films... this is a great shot, carl.. you can use any pic for background carl, right click and then click, set as background..I've used the one from ?? not telling you yet..ray..
Hi Ray, gimme time on this last one ) For a sec there I thought the older guy was Walter Brennan but I KNOW better ;-))
Hi Ray, forgot to reply bouth the first one. 1) Three Godfathers (a favorite of mine and much much better than the original which I thought was OK at best but still lame. 2) Big Jake-I recognized his Derringer which was what gave it away. Been a few years since I last saw it and need to watch it again ;-)) 3) The Horse Soldiers and yup is a great scene. Whitmans Artillery on the move. 4) Unkn. This new one-I couldnt say cept that thats Burt Lancaster as an "Injun". ;-))
I love Red River and hatari. I donrt know what movie that is with Duke and Colbert? Reunion In France??? Ive never seen that oen either.
Without Reservations OH: and I havent seen that one either ;-)) The Football pic is atricky one as he did i think 3-4 of them back in the late 20s and early 30s. Ive only seen the last one and this aint it.
Not sure of the 1930s pic of Duke but his outfuit looks a little like what he wore in Stagacoach but this aint Stagecoach. As for the Coop and Burt Lancaster pic, that is from Vera Cruz, an alltime favorite of mine with them in it including several who later became VERY hugs stars like: Ernest Brognine, Charles Bronson and Jack Elam and Elisha Cook Jr. Oh and, Denise Darcel sure makes fro a nice one to look at ;-)) Forgot to mention that The one and ONLY--Joker (Cesar Romero) is also in the movie. I forget the name of the guy playing the sea captain but he is also a well-known recognizable face. The last one is unkn. Isnt that Charles McGraw with the pistol pointed at Coop?
Ahh, thats why I didnt get it? I have only seen a few bits and pieces of thios movie and the "jury" is out on whether or not ill like this one. I do remember Harry Carey Sr in it.
