    Born at Bückeburg on 16 January 1892, Wilhelm von Apell was an officer cadet with Jäg.Btl. 7 in 1910 then a Leutnant in 1911. He served in that unit during the 1914-18 war, which he ended with the rank of Oberleutnant. He pursued his career between the two wars. Promoted to Oberst on 1 October1938, he commanded Kav.Schtz.Flgt. 11. Promoted to Generalmajor on 1 April 1941, he rose to Generalleutnant on 1 April 1943; he commanded 9. Schtz.Brig. from 16 February 1940. He held on to this command until 27 August 1941. Shortly afterwards, he was appointed to command 22. Pz.Div. (25 September 1941). Placed in the OKH reserve (8 October 1942), he became Wehrersatz-Inspekteurin Vienna (15 March 1943). He was taken prisoner by the Americans on 8 April 1945, and released on 11 June 1947. He died at Varnholt near Baden-Baden on 7 March 1969. Awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross (14 May 1941).
