I enjoyed these, and will have to look for more! Thanks. Also thanks for the information information on Medic Doss. Incredible heroism and selflessness.
Boston College Magazine has a good article on Bill Mauldin this month. Here is the link. It is an enjoyable read and gives some detail on Mauldin's meeting with Patton. Boston College Magazine » Spring 2008 » Features » Behind the lines I also just found a link to a good interview with Mauldin's biographer (Todd DiPastino). Edward R.Hamilton bookseller in falls village CT(I used to work there) has a 2 volume slipcased all inclusive collection of Mauldins work for 39.95. plus 3.50 s+h. look for their site online.
If you like Maudlin's work, consider a trip to the 45th Infantry museum in OKC. I think the originals are on display there.
Boy, that's a NICE looking museum! 45th Infantry Museum If you click on 'Exhibits' along the top banner, and then 'Bill Mauldin' on the left side, it will take you to a description of the Bill Mauldin Cartoon Collection exhibit. If I'm ever in the area, that will certainly be on MY short list of 'must-sees'. Thanks for mentioning it. -whatever -Lou
ED: Just spotted, Mr Goldstein beat me to it but I'll leave the post as it was. I'm surprised no one has beaten me to it but has anyone else seen much of 'the two types' a cartoon published in the 8th Army magazine? Two British 8th Army officers offering a rather caustic vision of their battle through Egypt, Italy and so on. Some I found online: The rediculous kit is apparently a pretty fair reflection of the kind of gear soldiers wore, jumpers or wooly jackets to keep warm, cuordroy trousers because they are tough, heard wearing and comfortable, silly hats because, well, they are officers. I've got a book of the cartoons at home, I'll see if I can put up one or two more. Some of them are fantastic, I particularly like the one where they meet a similarly scruffy RAF chap and say 'desert airforce I presume?' Incidentally I just spotted this, love the irony
LOL - as they say.... ANYTHING you post on the internet can come back and bite you in the butt! -nice find! And, if you have some more of 'The Two Types', please do share them! BTW - was there a caption for the first one (with the two sign posts to fresh water and one to Bengazi) - not sure I totally 'got' that one. -whatever -Lou
I believe it's a reference to the 8th army's race to capture Benghazi, not letting the Axis hold the only drinking water for miles however tired they are.
“Well, personally, sir – I never play with the joker – but it seems to me that five aces would beat a straight flush.” -whatever -Lou
"Th' krauts ain't followin' ya so good on 'Lili Marlene' tonight, Joe. Ya think maybe somethin' happened to their tenor?" -whatever -Lou
I remember back in 2002 or 2003 it was posted that Mr. Mauldin was in a nursing facility and somewhat alone. Thousands and thousands of letters and postcards were sent to him. If I remember correctly, upon his deathbed people he never met or personally knew were at the facilty.
IF memory serves me correctly he also made some cartoons of willie and joe in Desert strom and even came out with a book of cartoons about it...
