Heh hhe, itchy fingers and 15 minute timed computers and my time is almost up as I ry to post ;-))

PS, what do you think about "Cross of Iron" my friend ;-)) I agree on Stalingrad. Oh and, have you ever seen A Time To Love and A Time To Die? If not? I think you might approve of that movie as well as of: Decision before Dawn ;-)) Two of my favorites from the 1950s and also where the Germans seem to get better treatment in portrayals than in most movies of the time.

Try finding any movie collectable of Where Eagles Dare-at least ofr an affordable price. In all my years of collecting such stuff, I have yet to find anything related to that movie at an affordable or more reasonable price.

Two great sources and both can get high on prices but is usually well worth it.

The first one is: Captain Bijou's Online Catalog This guy is out of Houston, TX and gets some amazing stuff in. I met him in person at a Gunshow in Corpus Christi a few years ago and almost bought a Manfred von Richthoffen signed calling card-which he has made a tasteful display with a couple of repop photos and some info and had it all framed. I couldnt cough up the $800.00 at that time.

Another and larger in stock source I buy from is Granda Movie Posters out of Dallas, Tx. I just bought an entire lobby card set for the movie: 36 Hours-which has James Garner in i-for less than $30 bucks-including shipping. I THINK his site is: Granada Movie Posters

    Hello Carl,

yes off course - how could I forget - Cross of Iron is a very good movie as for PartI, Part II IMO was total rubbish.
BoB surely is another great movie - problem is Carl, that I wouldn't by far know as many movies as you do.:)
Many of those that I have seen are the awfull kind of Hornets Nest, Battle of the Buldge, Guns of Navarone, A Bridge too Far, ..etc...etc.

    Regards
    Andy

I really do understand how insulting some of the older WWII movies must be in this regard. I make no apologies for 'Where Eagles Dare' which, let's be honest, isn't meant in any way to be taken seriously.....I always crack up when Anton Diffring almost utters the immortal cliche 'Ve haff vays of making you talk..' No - it's a 'Boy's Own Paper' movie for pure entertainment.

'Battle Of Britain' was one of the first British WWII movies not to portray the 'other side' as idiots - and this was done at the insistence of director Guy Hamilton. At the time, it was unusual to see Germans portrayed by German actors speaking German.

I hope that the acceptance and popularity of movies such as 'Das Boot' and 'Downfall' mean that we have moved on.

    Hello Martin Bull,

the problem is not really me - but those others (mostly allies ;)) who watch/watched those movies and tend/tended to see and evaluate them as historically.

Tarantinos Inglorious..., is a great entertaining movie to me - I wouldn't ever take this movie seriously - on the other hand reading upon posts in this Forum - a load of people reject the film due to their association of viewing upon war movies as being realistic.

    Regards
    Kruska

I loved this movie from the first time I saw it-circa about 1980 or so? I agree, the "sequal" was pretty bad even if it did have greats in it like Jurgens and Burton. I hated the cheap way that both Klaus Lowitsch and the other platoon survivor (of Cross of Iron)-were killed off. If you want some help on good war movies, please feel free to ask me ;-)) Oskar Werner, did an excellent job-as did Hans-Christian blech did, in: Decision Before Dawn. I loved the fact that all Germans were actually played by real, living...Germans ;-)) All the extras in Decision before Dawn, were real WWII vets wearing their own unforms and awards and such. Speakibng of, just yesterday, I got in a German released Cinema Card which had details about Decision Before Dawn on it ;-))

Speaking of Guns of Navarone. I watched it last night as it was played on TCM. The cast members ar all favorites of mine especially, Gregory Peck, Anthony Quinn, David Niven, Irene Papas (who I think recently passed awa-unfortunately) Anthony Quayle, Stanley Baker, und ze Chermin contingent too ;-))

    Hello Carl,

Decision before Dawn, is it that B&W movie were Germans change sides and actually work for the Americans?
    Bloody traitors :D

There is another B&W movie I remember faintly - not much action IIRC but very well done on the story:
Some American officer (Robert Wagner?) is caught before D-Day and medically traumatised into believing that the war is over - All Germans are dressed as Americans and try to question him on behalf of D-Day in order to get a "good historical picture"
At the end the story blows because he can see that one of the nurses has a KZ tatoo.

    Regards
    Kruska

"36 Hours" with James Garner, based on the 1944 short story "Beware of the Dog" by Roald Dahl:

    Hello alieneyes,

    Hmmm.. are you sure?

Could there be two simmilar movies?

I am really dead sure the captured officer was an American, he was an Overlord - as such he was captured/kidnapped by the Germans

Furthermore IIRC he and that nurse got the help of some old German Volksturm or Borderguard who helped them to flee into Switzerland.

Or am I just getting old? :D

    Regards
    Kruska

I am positive, Kruska. The movie "36 Hours" is based on the short story by Dahl, himself an RAF pilot:

    36 Hours (1965)
