    I thought the same, but there was no actual land battle for the Japanese home islands to finish with a suicide charge.

    I'm going to guess the Aleutians, although that's a group of islands rather than an individual island...

    Actually, I believe I can think of four:
    Peleliu, the Phillipines, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Although Pedantic Man isn't here yet, it should be pointed out that the Japanese evactuated several islands in the Solomons, including Guadalcanal and New Georgia, and retreated (sort of) from some positons in New Guinea.

    Anyways, the answer is Peleliu! Canambridge is right!

    The Japanese commander in the island studied Tarawa and decided they could have made the US pay a heavier price had they not attacked with a futile banzaii, therefor, he gave the order to stand in and defend to the last. A shock to the average offensive doctirned Japanese.
