That's the one. Lt Dewayne Francis and his observer Lt. Martin of the 5th Armored division shot down a Fiesler Storch using their .45 cal pistols in late April 1945. The aircraft was named "Miss Me," an L-4B Piper Cub.

No, I know it is difficult and demeaning but think of your allies south of the channel.

It was Centre NC 223.4 number 2 civil regester F-ARIN named Jules Verne{/i] that performed that feat on the night of June 7 - 8 1940. The crew flew a 13.5 hour mission up the Channel, across Denmark to Berlin taking off Bordeaux - Merignac and landing back at Paris - Orly. They dropped 4,409 lbs of bombs on the mission.

If you posted 18 mins. earlier you would be a winner. Maybe I should take off an hour since you are in the mountain time zone. [IMG]

    Ok:

What was the furthest airborne / parachute assault in terms of distance flown from base in WW 2? Bonus points for distance flown.

We have a winner! Col. Raff's parachute battalion was flown over 1500 miles from England to le Bains airfield in Algeria for the drop. The C-47's were to land on the airfield after its capture lacking the range to return to friendly territory. In practice the operation was a conplete disaster but, it still marks the furthest orgainzed large parachute drop of WW II.
    Your turn Al.
