The US 3rd Infantry Division sustained the most KIA casualties of any US division in war. Which division had the second most KIAs?
Without looking it up, probably the 28th ID (aka "The Bloody Bucket" Division) seeing as how they suffered through Ohama beach, then Hurtgen Forest, then the Ardennes Offensive.
Another hint... At one time, it had as it's Assistant Divisional commander, the son of a former United States President.
I'm probably wrong here, but is it the 9th Infantry Division? EDIT: Is the assistant divisional commander you're talking about Brig. Gen. Kenneth Buchanan?
no and no. The AD was the son of more famous president. Was Brig. Gen. Kenneth Buchanan the son of President Buchanan?
Teddy Roosevelt Jr., 26th regiment, Big Red One. From the movie.....The U.S. Army consists of the 1st infantry Division, and 1-million replacements ?
He was the ADC of the 1st ID under Terry de la Mesa Allen, but the 1st ID was not the US division I was asking about. TR, Jr was also the ADC of another division, in another theater. Everybody make a mad scramble to google...
Then it would be the one who suffered the third most (total) casualties...22,660, and that would be the 4th ID. top (head losers) ten totals 25,997-3rd 23,277-9th 22,660-4th 20,993-45th 20,659-1st 19,466-36th 19,200-90th 18,446-30th 17,087-80th ?
4th ID is correct. Yes, they were third in total casualties, but #2 in KIAs. 3rd --4922 4th --4097 9th --3856 1st --3616 36th --3131 45th --3547 90th --3342
I want to say Chikuma, but also the Kongo, since it wasn't put out of action in Samar. Yamato sure didn't do very much, since it turned away from the battle to escape torpedoes. I think it was a heavy cruiser that put the Gambier Bay out of action, but I can't find anywhere to verify that. So, I'll choose Chikuma, final answer.
I have Chikuma down for beating up the Heerman and contributing to the Gambier Bay. Kongo hit Hoel with 2-14", Roberts with several of all types, and gave the "Coup de Grace" to both Johnston & Gambier Bay. Close enough, Your go
OK, here I go: There were two German Motorized Infantry Divisions in General Paulus' 6th Army that were involved in the seige of Stalingrad between September 14-22, 1942. What were they? Hint: Both were lost in the seige and reconstituted later on.
Yes, the 3rd and 29th were used. Correct. MISTAKE: Looking closer, I saw that there were three (Correct me if I'm wrong) motorized infantry divisions, the 29th, the 3rd, and the 60th. I had not previously heard of the 3rd before until now. I also thought they were part of the XX Corps. I really need to back up my sources.
