My profile is a picture of an IL-2M (early variant)
I use it because I am an aviation enthusiast, and have had the honour to fly an IL-2.
I am also of Russian descent, and have some grandparents who fought in the war on the Eastern Front.
There is also a Panzer-type tank in the foreground, which highlights the fact that there were 2 sides in WW2, not just 'us' and 'them'.

VF-11 Sun Downers, this the 1942-1943 version, blue grey instead of dark blue. This, BTW, is a crop of a photo of the insignia as painted on a panel of a squadron F4F.

I don't even remember what my old Avatar was. The new one is just me. I moved to Arizona six months ago and like to sit on the veranda and shoot various military weaponry into the desert. I've got steel plates at various ranges. I like to hear the "ping" of bullets striking steel.

Mine is a plaque on a bridge in Maastricht:
    Plaque Old Hickory Sint-Servaasbrug
(Netherlands, the - Limburg - Maastricht)

The memorial plaque was placed near the stairs to the Strekdam between the Sint-Servaas bridge and the Wilhelmina bridge in Maastricht.

The text on the monument is as following:
    'OLD HICKORY
IN HONOR OF THE 117TH INF. REG.
    OF THE 30TH INFANTERY DIVISION
    13-14 SEPT. 1944'.

The plaque for the 'Old Hickory Division' is there to remind the citizens of Maastricht of the liberation of the city on the 13th and 14th of September 1944 by the American troops of the 30th Infantry Division.

My current avatar is an M-10 tank destroyer of the 776th TD Bn somewhere in North Africa. I modified it from grayscale to B&W to create an interesting effect.

Avatar inspirations are always genuinely interesting. Mine is my desired look after my gender transition is complete.

    @Otto
When will you change that plastic armyman avatar? You've had it for years and it's getting old, freshen up!

It's a modern photo taken after her last refit in the last 20 years. Sadly they may fill in the mooring to protect the hull which has had to be repaired since she was demobilized after WWII. Hate to see that, but may be the only way to preserve her long term in this climate.

It is time to freshen up. Avatars are serious business, time for a brainstorm.
