I believe good chances. However I hate the bad photos of the find. Clean it and come back. The u-boats practised there before entering the Atlantic

BERLIN (Reuters) - German divers searching the Baltic Sea for discarded fishing nets have stumbled upon a rare Enigma cipher machine used by the Nazi military during World War Two which they believe was thrown overboard from a scuttled submarine.

Thinking they had discovered a typewriter entangled in a net on the seabed of Gelting Bay, underwater archaeologist Florian Huber quickly realised the historical significance of the find.

.the archaeologist ''quickly realised''' what it was???? that seems incredible.....I don't think many people would know what one looks like if found in great condition

It's not incredible to me, a underwater archaeologist working in the Baltic sea figures out a typewriter type device found on the sea bed might just be a Enigma device. Considering nearly every German U-boat and surface ship worked up/trained in the Baltic during the war and many were lost there if you wanted a good chance to find one, the Baltic is the spot.

No way to tell, a good chance it came from a U-boat but any moderately large surface unit might have one or been on a transport ship/plane going to Finland/Norway or even to a embassy in Sweden.

Yes, just curious as the area was used for u-boat practice. Some u-boat might have taken a dive forever then again many were declared as untouchable as having dead seamen.

It appears pretty bashed up and certainly 50 years under water did not help, but is possible that some form of identifying mark/number may be recoverable leading to a positive ID as to where it came from. Might help solve a mystery.

The Swedish battleship Mars was nicely reserved for not being in the so salty water? Could better reserved items be found as mentioned the Finnish gulf etc were used as u-boat practice areas. That is if they are allowed to be searched.
