    "An incredibly interesting German field modification performed on a captured KV-1. The vehicle seems to have been short-tracked with Panzer III/IV tracks. Potentially used as a semi-mobile bunker."

    Years ago I read an article in the Naval Institute Proceedings about WWII camouflage which included this scheme. It was abandoned because it was too confusing to our own ships in formation!

    Since the track doesn't go around the drive sprocket, I would have to agree with "semi-mobile";)

    Note that the aft 4" gun is on the main deck and the 3"/23 antiaircraft gun on the aft deckhouse. This was an early arrangement in the flush-deckers; the two guns were later interchanged. The deckhouse position has better arcs of fire and less chance of being washed out at high speed or in heavy seas; apparently the Navy at the time gave preference to the low-angle armament.

    This was the age of "torpedoboat destroyers", so surface action was their primary mission.

    "F6F-3 Hellcat flown by Butch O'Hare with over 200 bullet holes from combat was brought to the production plant to show the workers what they are building. Butch was awarded the medal of Honor in 1942 for shooting down five bombers attacking his carrier."
