    VX-5 at Moffett Field worked on this problem also, in the mid 1950's. They worked out a way to perform the bomb loft with the AD Skyraider as well.

    "Consolidated TBY Sea Wolf. Originally the Vought XTBU-1, it was a competitor to the Grumman TBF Avenger. Though it was deemed to have superior performance, delays ranging from the project being transferred to Consolidated, and damage to the prototype during tests ensured the plane never saw combat."

    The main, and basically only, delay was one of production. Vought was overbooked producing Corsairs, so the design was handed off to Consolidated-Vultee(later Convair) which was also booked up. Thus, the Sea Wolf had to wait for a new factory to be acquired and outfitted(Mack Truck factory in Allentown,Pa) which took time. With the first Sea Wolf rolling off the line in August, 1944, and accepted in December, 1944 - by which time the Avenger was already in full production and equipping all Navy torpedo squadrons.

    Yes, it became standard practice for the B-47s as Soviet AA defenses improved, and the B-47 became less able to penetrate them. Although, while SOP, pilots had to be careful practicing the maneuver, as it overstressed the airframe during the 3-4G pull up.

    I guess they assumed the frontal hull armor would be inadequate to begin with, a.e.b. the spare track preemptively hung on the bow even before production.
