    Note that the forecastle and forward superstructure extend almost to the catapults, intended to allow Augusta, sisters Chicago and Houston, and near-sister Indianapolis to serve as fleet flagships. Besides presidential duties, she accommodated General Patton for the Morocco landings in Operation Torch and Omar Bradley at Omaha Beach.

    On the afternoon of July 11, 1944, Canadian Corps Headquarters once again became operational on the soil of France. Lieutenant-General Guy Granville Simonds assumed responsibility for 7,280 metres of front in the Caen sector of Normandy. There was little time or inclination to mark this event or link it with the memory of the vaunted Canadian Corps of First World War fame because there was too much to be done.

    U.S. Air Force bombers fly over Ploiești, Romania, following a raid on August 1, 1943.

    Of the 16 cameramen accompanying this mission, the one who took this photo was the only one to survive.
