Had the “star and bar” on the wrong wing previously. Printed out on my printer, cut and glued it on. The decal sheet was long gone. P-51D Mustang. Might as well do it right, Revell kit, such as it is. Painted light aircraft gray and flat black. My own concept. Just can’t seem to have much patience anymore, must come with age?

I just finished this Tamiya model. I don’t sleep much at all anymore, so it only took two days. Sprayed the deck, got too dark. So be it. I didn’t follow the instructions after a while. This was difficult, the parts were 75% minute. The lines on the deck and some of the rest were my own concept. As far as the brush painting with testors paints, I kept that to a minimum. Mostly done with tweezers and a toothpick and a flashlight and testors standard model glue. No decals were provided except the stars and bars for the planes and I could only apply the ones to the wings. Supposed to be Hellcats and Devastators I believe. I also am aware that the ship did not have the stack painted in this way in the same time period with this type of aircraft. They gave you the white line decals for the deck. I wrecked them, so I used a credit card for a straight edge and drew them on with a fine white pen. I know the plastic water is too short and it was plastic panels from Hobby Lobby, sprayed blue and taped together. At least it is a sort of a base. I suppose I could have ordered something or made more authentic water from youtube instructions. No more like this one. Not at 76.

 

One more. After looking at the photo of the model on line I realized that I had forgotten to glue the one radar screen onto the stack.

 

Cool! The ammo belts are a neat touch.

Thanks and I have one more of the carrier since I added a base, a strand of rigging and a pin, (E-4 which I was)

 

...I got a piece of '''wavy'' glass....it was not clear, but frosted........used it for the ocean...looked pretty good,..but that was decades ago- lost it
......the glass was not smooth either, so that worked well

 

I keep making additions and now I am done for sure……….

 

Beautiful work again Half Track. The model and water are awesome looking. Just like you are there in the deep blue pacific. And I kind of like the short ocean surface along with the stand you make. It just works!

 

Thanks. It was two pieces of rough plastic from Hobby Lobby and two pieces of their plywood, glued together and painted. I suppose I could have added another but it would have been difficult after it was finished without possibly damaging the display. Anyway, it just fits in with no more room to spare on my fireplace mantle along with a battleship and a destroyer. One Revell model and two Tamiya.

 

what's the ocean material?

 

Just thin plastic with a slightly raised surface, sold at Hobby Lobby. I painted blue with a can of modeling spray paint. Actually, the deck of the carrier was not supposed to be that color, but a lighter blue called field blue. But I messed up when I first painted the white lines on the deck and had to spray over them. That’s when it got darker.

 

why that color?

 

The deck of that carrier and some other ships of the time had their decks painted a light blue of sorts. In this case the model’s instruction sheet called for the color to be “field blue”. That’s what Tamiya called it, anyway. Somwhere, I read that it helped to camouflage the ships from the air, in regards to enemy planes. I have a Franklin Mint model of the USS Missouri (BB-63) and the deck is painted blue. In actuality, the deck on the real ship was painted blue and was this way at the Japanese surrender in September of 1945. I shall try to post an overhead photo of my model……..
