They would have said the same thing before the US Civil War. We came out of that with a clearer definition of "USA". It went from "these United States" to "the United States". And "Manifest Destiny" was the call. I think Mexico would have tried to reclaim Texas it the ACW had resulted in two countries. The South didn't have the industrial base to conduct a defensive war, as Sherman proved.

I took a few psych courses at Purdue. (Unrelated to anything.) In one the prof mentioned that when he was working at a locked door facility the staff wore street clothes instead of doctor garb. I had to ask "how did you tell the keepers from the kept?" The younger student all gasp but the prof just jangled his keys.

 

That would make me nervous. I knew a guard at a prison in Indiana who was found guilty of selling guns to the prisoners. Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?

I talked to a Soldier in ( let's say "somewhere in Iraq) in 2007. He called me - so he picked up the International charges ! (military & Rank hath it's privileges), Used Verizon in early 2000's and spent an enjoyable conversation with a guy station in Hawaii - being a weekend didn't cost me a penny.
Let's just say I ain't impressed with the richest man in the World.
