O.K. let's clarify that "solidity" thing:

At least to me there is a basic difference in discussing world war II or, let's say agriculture, computer software or stock markets. I assume most of us had lost one or more family members in WW II, so the topic is emotional and needs a certain sensibility and care in discussion.

However, even with all care, I think it's impossible to _not_ touch anyones feelings now and then, even with best caution and without intend. For example, a simple "who was the best SS-unit"-discussion might cause a bitter feeling to some people whose family suffered unbelievable under the SS rule; passim, a "Red Army-freedom figters or occupants?"-discussion will cause emotions among forum members who lost relatives may it be in the Red Army or the refugee trecks.

Now, that's where I think a certain "solidity" should be in place: I think in a war-forum, the forum member who had lost half of his family in (example) Nagasaki, should expect to read postings from other forum members who post facts to prove that dropping the bomb was the completey right thing to do. One should be able to handle this and still maintain a descent, factual discussion.

Hope that clears it up a bit.

    Cheers,

Well, I agree a lot with many of your thoughts, das Reich, Martin and Crazy! :D I love this place!

Perhaps the funniest, most cheerful and the best, but certainly not the most important! :D

Snif! You are bloody right, Martin! More than right! [IMG]
I do consider you all my friends!

Agree. The first one has worked perfectly. But the latter one...

Knowing ALL and everybody else are stupids...

I think Andy is more of the serious type, which is fine. Everyone comes to this forum for their own reasons. The FFZ should be about relaxing and a little time off from the trenches on the rest of the forum. Theres no reason to get into fueds in no-mans land.

AndyW; Ive enjoyed sparring with you in the Russian threads. It has really sharpened my debate skills, which I will need for the upcoming season.

Free fire zone=free discussion on any topic modern or past.
It just so happens that quite a few things have happened lately that people (not only knight) have wanted to discuss at length.
To ban that i think would be inappropriate. If you don't find the discussion stimulating, don't read it...since the discussion continues...it is obviouse someone finds it worth reading.

To ban one person because of their views...i think would also quite literally be the definition of hypocritical. Not all that knight says i agree with...in fact most i don't agree with! LOL But that doesn't mean he should be banned for his views or have his topics deleted...as long as he doesn't discriminate or be rude he can post whatever he wants.

If Otto intended this site to stay entirely in the ww2 era he would not have created nor condoned a thread like free fire zone. So to thus discuss the validity of certain posts in it seems like a mute point to me.

Andy, got it. Thae makes good sense.
Sorry to rip on the solidity line- I couldn't resist!! :D

    Just Crazy being, well, Crazy!!

Andy certainly does have a good point- any war or conflict, let alone one as big and encompassing as WW2, is bound to bring up some emotions in many people. That's one of the things that makes this forum so impressive- the level of discussion that goes on and the maturity displayed.

That's why I see the FFZ as being a good part- we can come in here to forget about that maturity and sensitivity, and just shoot the sh*t about whatever, get to know each other, and so on.

    dasreich... :D :D :D :D
What, are you suggesting that my avatar does not display the utmost level of seriousness?
    :D :D

Aarrrgh... Martin, those lines sound way too familiar... hint?

Well, after just reading the (frankly quite unbelievable!) post of our dear comrade Knight Templar [mate, you need help, I'm serious] I cannot help but say that with the exception of one [or is he gone?!] everybody here has displayed a certain level of maturity on every topic. Even I try at times! [IMG]

IMHO this is still the best forum there is because so far none of the WW2 threads have become emotional. Even the Dresden bombing was handled with cool judgement for the largest part. This is constructive and good.

And Martin: I've extensively sampled FFZ threads and found them to cause me indigestion. Since then I've been rather put off by most, especially the ones KT put up.

Now is the time to get back to being serious, ESPECIALLY with Snoopy leading the way on his Sopwith Camel looking out for The Red Baron.  [IMG]
