First off, thanks Richard, Jeff ;-))

Miguel, you would need to send a PM to Michael (DakotaSurfer) at: John Wayne and ask him, he probably has a copy of it and might have an extra handy. IF no luck with him, try ColoradoBob at JWMB - The Original John Wayne Message Board! and ask him, this guy has almost anything and everything, to do w/ Duke on Tape, Cassette, DvD etc-that exists.

There was some acrimony oin this thread last week when I was talking about Rio Bravo etc.

Let's see: I like the Duke. Period.

I don't have to like all his movies, especially when a "young talent" is inserted for no obvious benefit to the film, likewise for an out of character main female, with a totally out of period wardrobe. As for the Duke's role in the movie I have no objection at all, I liked it.

There are better films, there are others not so good. The actor in case can look better in some, not in others, and that wasn't even the case here. As a paralell, look at the Godfather, I, II and III, for instance. Al Pacino was great in I and II. He might have been great as well in III, but the film is so awfully bad that not even A.P. could have saved it!

    I hope I've made my point :)

Girl friends, boy friends, nepotism is a huge part of Hollywood, Business, Politics.

Just look how many blazing careers were launched by Hugh Heffner.:D

That show Andromeda (Sci-Fi) had a new "leading lady" whenever Kevin Sorbo got a new girlfriend.

Talent comes in many guises. :D

I like the "Duke" too !

Hi Miguel, point accepted and well taken. I too don't like every film Duke was in-for instance-I don't care much for The Quiet Man, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, Shephard of the Hills and The Conqurour (SP?)-while the vast majority of Duke fans love The Quiet Man, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon and Shephard of the HIlls.

Also, speaking of which is best in the Cavalry Trilogy, I think Fort Apache is the best closely followed by Rio Grande and in last place-She Wore a Yellow Ribbon. However, most others like them in this order: Fort Apache, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon and Rio Grande. I can't :insane: that out?

Three Godfathers, Sands of Iwo Jima, Allegheny Uprising, Fort Apache, Rio Grande, The Searchers, Hondo, The Alamo, The Longest Day, El Dorado, Rio Bravo, The Sons of Katie Elder, Rio Lobo, Big Jake and The Shootist, are some of his best films.

Now please, don't drag Clint Eastwood into this thread. I like Clint Eastwood movies, even his spaghetti westerns (The Good the Bad and the Ugly, Man with No Name, oh of course The Outlaw Joshua Wales), and my recent personal favorite, Space Cowboys. Who can ever forget the gunnery sergeant Clint plays in Heartbreak Ridge? Or his time with the Orangutan in the Every Which Way movies? Or the Dirty Harry series?

You can't compare Clint with the Duke. They're like apples and oranges. Sure I like John Wayne films too but I have only been able to watch a few. The worst John Wayne film for me is ARGH! where he plays Genghis Khan or was it Kublai Khan? I can't forget him saying something like this: "hellow mother, what's for dinner?" in his Western twang! That ruined the movie for me.
My personal favorite for John Wayne is the Horse Soldier.

I have to admit, though, that I prefer to watch a Clint Eastwood movie over a John Wayne flick. I guess this is because of a generational gap. John Wayne is a personal favorite of my dad and I was maybe three or four years old when I first saw my first Clint Eastwood movie.
If ever the Duke and Clint meets, who would be the faster on the draw?
I don't think they'd ever draw. They'll be too busy exchanging one liners!

Duke: Fill your hand! (Wants Clint to draw first)

Clint: (Shakes his head and dares the Duke to draw first) Go ahead make my day.

And so forth and so on.

The worst movie Clint made was when he agreed to co-star with Burt Reynolds. By the way, do you guys realize that when the character Wolverine was originally drawn for Marvel Comics, Clint was used as the inspiration? On the other hand, Paul Newman was used by DC for the Hal Jordan Green Lantern model.

Hey Carl, we're going to have to come to punches someday: I LOVE the Quiet Man, one of my email addresses is TrooperThornton@xxx :D

On the other hand, The Conqueror, boy oh boy, that sure was a shitty film if ever I saw one

Good post with things well said.

Also, did you know that the DC Comics Character: "Jonah Hex" was a character created from Clint Eastwoods character of: "Josey Wales" from the excellent Western: "The Outlaw Josey Wales."

That "fight" would be OK by me, as long as we use the "Paul Fix" punches. ;-))

I have to agree w/ you on The Conqueror, I can't stand that film. Also, just because he (Howard Hughes) was a Billionnaire, does not make him a Director. Howard Hughes sucked BIG Prune Pits, as a movie Director.

not really....but I admit a certain weakness for the duke...there's just something about that voice of his...almost paternal. so he was sexist...at least he was a real man:D

This is just my opinion, but I think Eastwood makes for a better western actor and Wayne
more suited for a WWII actor.

I see what you mean, but while Eastwood made a good present day po-leese (Dirty Harry), he doesn't do justice to western lawmen, like Duke did. But then Duke ain't a very good western outlaw either.

Duke was too used to being a Good Guy, that the Bag Guy in him-just wasn't. I can think of only these films with him as a baddie-one was: Three Godfathers (Robert Marmaduke Hightower)--which he was excellent in, and not near as bad as his character is alleged to be, The Angel and the Badman (Quirt Evans) alleged bad gunfighter gives it up for a family life, Stagecoach (the Ringo Kid) which is my favorite of his seemingly "bad guy" roles-which really wasn't, Pittsburg (Charles "Pittsburg" Markham) Baddie gone good guy role) Sons of Katie Elder (John Elder) not as bad as is lead to believe, The Train Robbers (Lane) again-not as bas as is supposed to be.

Actually, he never really was a bad guy in any of his movies-which is one thing seared into the minds of his billions of fans world-wide-that also makes him their favorite movie star/Cowboy/War Hero.

Right now on AMC, there is a poll going on that simply asks: Who would win in a gunfight with each other? and you know i'll of course pick Duke over Eastwood-though I like Eastwood as much as I like Duke.

Thanks! I didn't know that Clint was the model for Jonah Hex. I wasn't really into DC's Western comic books. I read Marvel's the Rawhide Kid.

Yup! feminists ruined a lot of nice things...most men now don't pull a chair out for a lady, won't open or hold doors for a lady...I miss these little niceties. I agree with whoever was saying the clints a better western actor...waynes a good ww2 actor...too bad those old war movies are so darned camp!:D its hard to watch that stuff after 'saving private ryan' and 'band of brothers' .
