Found this when going through the old records I inherited from my father. I'm sure Carl has seen this one.
Hi Zippo, I don't have that record but plan on buying it on CD. It's full of his thougghts and such about how he felt about this great Country ;-)) The record is a bit hard to get so i'd keep it if I were you ;-)) I have been collecting some of hi Lux Radio-plays that he did of several of his movies including Rio Grande, Sands of Iwo Jima and She Wore a Yellow Ribbon. Hi Halfpint, JagdT/ Halfpint-Randy Rides Alone is one of his better early Westerns and one of my favorites too. However, try Stagecoach and Allegheny Uprising-both released in 1939-and both are great. Stagecoach is the movie that made him an "A" list movie star-and came out just a few months after Allegheny Uprising. For other great early Duke westerns-any that have him as Stony Brooke as one of the Three Mesquiteers. Thse he did with Ray "Crash" Corrigan and I forget the third Gents name? im thinking of Gwinn "Big Boy" Williams but know it aint him who was the third Mesquiteer. Hi JagdT/ I have seen that pic and it's been on T-shirts-posters and bumper-stickers.
Favorite John Wayne quotes: "I've had three wives, six children and six grandchildren and I still don't understand women" "Never say sorry, it's a sign of weakness" "Tomorrow hopes we have learned something from yesterday" View attachment 6815 Thanks John! Mark
Hi Jem/ Ill try to find an excellent one that was done by one of his most frequent colaborators--Paul Fix. Its a real hoot as well as intelligent thought provoking quote.
My favorite Wayne quote of all time is from The Shootist. John Bernard Books: "I won't be wronged, I won't be insulted, and I won't be laid a hand on. I don't do these things to other people and I expect the same from them."
Hi Jem, im still looking for Fix's quote-I can't remember where I saw it posted at? but I should be able to find it by later tonight. Clint-that's an excellent quote. One of my all-time most favorite Duke quotes is: "Im looking at a tin star...with a drunk pinned to it." This is from El Dorado and he was talking to Robert Mitchum ;-))
Turner Classic Movies is running a John Wayne festival this coming Tuesday (August 18). Here is a link to the line-up: http://www.tcm.com/schedule/index.jsp?startDate=8/18/2009&timezone=EST&cid=N
Hi David, thanks for this heads-up. I had not known that TCM was having a day of Duke movies to show. Also, for any Duke fans and those that love The Alamo--TCM will be showing a VERY rare copy of The Alamo. This one was only released on Laser Disc-never released on VHS, Beta and DvD-thanks to the owner who owns this one known and surviving example-of the movie with uncut scenes. This version is several or more minutes longer than the version commonly seen on TV and or that is available on DvD. It's a damned shame that the person who owns this one known surviving copy of the movie-is constantly refusing to let publishers make this version available. Watching this version of that Duke, Widmark & Boone classic, is more than worthwhile. Some scenes in this version that you don't see in the other version include the Birthday party scenes showing Ken Curtis's (Captain Dickensons) Daughter being serenaded by Chill Wills and others. If I remember correctly? Ken Curtis also sings a song to his "daughter" who really is one of Dukes real life Daughters. Ken Curtis-prior to being associated with Duke and on Gunsmoke as Deputy Festus Hagen, was one of the leads in the great Western group: Sons of the Pioneers, and also being the "Johnny" who took over an Orchestra from Frank Sinatra.
I've a buddy who thinks John Wayne is the number one guy,i've no number one but the duke is right up there.
You and friend have good taste. ;-)) Duke is a top favorite of mine but is tied with Gents like Richard Basehart, Sir John Mills, Oakar Werner and others. I can never have a completly top most favorite as so many of these "old school" actors are all favorites of mine. You can say that others like: Charlton Heston, Ronald Wilson Reagan, Richard Widmark, Henry Fonda, James Coburn, Ernest Borgnine, Burt Lancaster, Kirk Douglas, James Francis Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, Jeff Chandler, Robert Mitchum, Van Johnson, Kurt Jurgens, Klaus Lowitsch, Anthony Quinn, Gregory Peck, Gary Cooper, Bruce Bennett, Errol Flynn and just too many others to try to list-are all in the Nr 1 spot with me. Now, I CAN have a favorite movie by each of these but some of them will be rotating favorites. For instance, I could choose John Waynes Three Godfathers, one week, then Allegheny Uprising the next-and Stagecoach following that one-etc.
"Fill your hands, you sonofabitch." I like that quote. One of the best. Easy to remember, straight to the point and no question about what is fixing to happen next....
My favorite quote is a simple "Burning daylight" from The Cowboys. I say that whenever I want to hurry things along at twilight.
i forget which movie it is but i really enjoyed it "can you please let me know what time it is on my new watch" or something like that, at the end of the movie he receives a pocket watch as a present i think it was his birthday or retiring from the calvery
Hi FG, that quote was by him in: She Wore A Yellow Ribbon-which is one of the John Ford ""Cavalry"" Trilogy. ;-))
