Hello to everyone. I've been looking in on this board for a little while and now have a reason to post. I've read a little about ww2 and watched everything I could on T.V. but have little knowledge about alot of things especially German collectables. I just bought two german postcards with a black & white photo of an officer and across the bottom is printed the ss insignia then a dash and the word Sturmbannfuhrer then the name Buchner across the bottom. There is more printing across back but no hand writing. Can anyone tell me anything about these or point me in the right direction where I can learn more about this person on the postcard. Thank you all very much
Hello Maxwell, welcome to the forums and thanks for posting ! Now - I'm afraid I'm not yer man for this sort of thing ( we have some real Reich militaria experts on these forums ) so let's see if one of them can come up with any clues.....
Hi Maxwell and welcome to the forums. Can you please tell me the full name of this man if it is listed? It sounds to me like you have a postcard of a man who is a Knights Cross Recipient. (Knights Cross=Iron Cross with ribbon worn around the neck--just in case you didn't know) Is this a photo-card or an art-card? If it is a photo-card--it sounds to me like you have a Heinrich Hoffmann made card. These sell regularly for $20.00 on up--depending on who it is and the condition and whether or not it is autographed. I collect Heinrich Hoffmann press photos my self, but not yet into the Knights Cross Hoffmann Cards--tho I would like to get some.
Thank you for your replies. Field Marshall Evans sir, the cards I have are photo cards (that's one of the words on back that is in english). The only thing as far as name of the officer pictured is just Buchner on front of card. Yes he does have a cross around his neck and one on left breast pocket. Also on back where you would write your message are the words in this order Photo-hoffmann, Mundjen, friedridjftr.34 Nadjdrud verboten , I think this is what it says its hard to read, printing is small. The cards are in good condition, no staining or tears but no autograph either. I'm hoping this is the start of my ww2 collection. Again thank you for your replies, looking forward to hearing from you.
Hi Maxwell--yep--those are Heinrich Hoffmann foto-post cards. The other kind of ww2 post cards you usually see are Willrich Art post cards. These are mainly done only with a man who is a Knights Cross recipient. I preferr the Heinrich Hoffmann cards myself. There is a third catagory on ww2 post cards--the onse that the individual gets made himself--meaning that these are basically one-of-a-kind and not mass-produced like the Hoffmann and Wilrich cards are. I don't own any Hoffmann Cards--yet--but do plan on buying some when the funds are available and I have nothing else at the moment that im trying to order. You can get these ranging as low as $5.00 on up--depending on which Knights Cross Recipient you have. The Rommel cards are some of the more expensive ones. The wording in small print on the backside is only where this card was printd--the printers address and something that is like a copyright on that pic. A VERY nice and well-known site was recently forced to shut down because they were a German site in Germany, and the companies that produced certin pics this guy posted--complained--threatened to sue him--for copyright infringement--or force him into paying a huge sum of residuals to them in order to keep these pics on his site. As he had a few hundred posted there--there simply was no choice for him but to close his site. That was a damn shame too--because it was THE site to go to to get info on any RKT you wanted to get info on. Anyway, you have a good start at collecting. I started off with one item, and now, I have hundreds. This of course is including--medals and badges, insignia, parts to uniforms, weapons, posters, and photographs--many autographed.
Thank you for the info on my postcards. I'm so excited about them, my first true German ww2 era objects, I still can't hardly believe it! Now if I could find out something about the man pictured on them. Anything would be nice. Again thank you so much. I love this forum.
You say he was an SS Sturmbannfuhrer and it only gives his last name? What will help me in giving you possible info is: Besides him wearing his Knights Cross (neck) and his Iron Cross 1st Class (Left breast pocket) is he wearing any other awards? Awards such as: Artillery Badge. Badge with an artillery piece on it surrounded by a wreath) or Infantry Assault Badge. (Badge with a rifle inside a wreath)) or Panzer Assault Badge. (Badge with a Tank inside a wreath)) Are any of these shown on it? If so, I can possible tell you more about him. Let me know and i'll be back here tomorrow. PS: Describe your other post card please.
PSS: Check under the Militaria section close to the bottom of these forums and look in the thread Carl's militaria collection Pt1. In there you will see pics of mu infantry Assault Badges, Panzer Assault Badges and two different Artillery badges.
