Greetings all - I was sitting here tonight just kicking back after a long, hot, bitch of a day at work. Maybe those of you who work retail jobs where ever you reside might know what I mean. Anyway, with a cool glass of my favorite liquid refreshment, and an arm load of cd's, I tossed a few in that I hadn't listened to in quite awhile. Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Led Zeppelin, U-2, Janis Joplin, Moody Blues, The Who, Jefferson Airplane, Styx, Kansas, ZZ Top, Heart, ( Early ) Rolling Stones, ( Late ) Beatles, etc., etc. You know, it really sounded good to listen to it once again, so........., I was just wondering, is there anyone out there besides myself who can enjoy an evening of this sort of classic rock, or, am I possibly, publicly, admitting that I am, indeed, a music dinosaur? Be good to each other. Bill
I am saddened, for you did not include Creedence Clearwater Revival in your list. The rest are great in my book!!! CvM "Gotta whole lotta Love"
Some of those are too modern for my turn-table Bill? The only ‘Classic Rock’ category for me is naturally Led. I don’t even class most of the others as ‘rock’. Flying in the face of probable world opinion, I don’t like Hendrix. Though it wasn’t said about Hendrix, I think a comment of the great Buddy Rich at a ‘rock’ concert he was coerced into attending, sums up my sentiments quite well. “I don’t like people rehearsing on my time!” Occasionally when channel hopping I find some pop band on TV. I see 4 or 5 whatever people in a put-together marketing band attempting some kind of harmony. IMHO, compared to the likes of Dion and the Belmonts, Danny and the Juniors and some dozen or so black vocal groups, they’re not even second rate. As for being ‘cool’, they’re not even tepid. Then, on occasion you see them on a chat show and the host gets them to sing live on the spot. 19 Times out of 20 they worse at holding tune than I am. In other words, without the benefit of computer pitch benders they’re a joke! It’s hardly worth talking about current ‘bands’, as who can play anything now? Nowadays everyone wants to be a pop star, in which no way is musicianship a requirement. If it is, then just dick around with a sampler and synth till you’ve got 4 bars together, then programme the machine to repeat ad nausium. People like Jimmy Page, Albert Lee, Lonnie Mac, Buddy Cage, Shirley Douglas, King Curtis and dozens of others of the time have discarded more than the current alleged ‘musicians’ have ever learnt all put together. My turntable rarely spins anything outside 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. In the words of Eddy Fontaine; ’Ain’t nothing’ shakin’ but the leaves on the trees’ No.9
hmmmmmm intersting comments No 9. not a Jimi Hendrix lover eh ? ah well...... Thin Lizzy thank you or even the modern day Joe Satriani or Steve Vai. I luv guitar and way you serve it up and of course the classical German Laute which goes way back before Baroque.....so I suppose this could be reated oldies depending how you look at it. You of course are very correct about the boy and girl bands........oh please ! that is so prevalent in todays youth. no singing skills and a definate non-entertaining bunch for a fact. Rap, oh help me! theres a pile of crap lying on the floor. Ooooooops sorry we were talking about oldies weren't we ?
Gentlemen - Thank you for your responses. Basically you have shown that there is yet hope that in this 21st century of music ( is it really? ) where rap is played daily at never ending decibles as "music", along with hip-hop ( isn't this something a rabbit endures as motivation from its hatch to the farmer's veggie patch? ) and other assorted venues of sound. I stand before you and say, thank God that I grew up in my time of the sixties, and seventies when, as No. 9 puts it so well, most guitarists threw away more than what these guys put out today. No. 9 - Cut it any way you want to, I'm in your boat. No argument from me. Those that you have listed stand well on their own merits. Erich - I hear you, I hear you. Even after too many rock concerts thwarting the tone levels in my ears, I can still hear you! As for those of whom I listed, a mere smattering of the many that still reign in the concert halls of my youth. Differences of who is what concering the classics is likened to all of us enjoying the same style of cake - only the flavor of the frosting might differ from one palet to the next! Bill
NO.9 How can you not like Jimi Hendrix Purple Haze is only the gretest song ever I like all rock from the 60's to today, I even listen to rap ocassionally.
People's opinions of music are some of the most ignorant things people say. Referring to one type as nonsense is just stupid. I was a music production major for two years. I happen to like Hip Hop....along with techno, dance, r&b, soul, motown, classic rock, modern rock, and teen pop. I dislike certain styles of music, but to each his own...they're still types of music and somebody enjoys them.
The first thing you stated I agree with. People's opinions are peoples opinions, and those who author them are allowed the right to retain them. Just as much as there are those who enjoy listening to country music, classical, techno, or what ever, there are those who don't. I fall in to the portions of this, but not all. I can handle classical and techno, but not country. Oh well. I would assume by your running commentary that you are one of those who enjoy rap, techno, etc. Great, so do my sons and their friends. To say that my comments concerning rap and hip hop are "stupid", perhaps they are - to you, and those who like this form of music. To me, I would say that my tastes simply differ. That's good too that they do. It would be a boring world having each and every one of us enjoying the same thing. Anyone else out there wish to list their thoughts on classical rock? Bill
Amen to that! Personally I'm stuck in an 80's warp (Depeche Mode, The Cure, U2, Simple Minds, Big Country, Talk Talk, The Cult, etc). I guess we all have a special affection for the music of our youth. On the other hand I'm also partial to heavy and grudge metal, hard dance, certain types of rap and classical. Artistes like Eminen make me nauseous. That supposedly hard hitting tripe that many people see as a wonderful talent IMHO is another great "Rock n' Roll Swindle". But then again each to his own. When it comes to classic rock, its more a matter of liking certain classic rock tracks rather than certain artistes. Eg. Leila, Kashmir, Watch Tower, We gotta get out of this place, Give Me Shelter, Gloria, The End..... Spitfire, stating that "People's opinions of music are some of the most ignorant things people say" is surely at odds with "but to each his own". Stating a dislike for something, doesn't make it an ignorant opinion.....when it comes to music it's just a matter of taste. Pete [ 20. July 2003, 09:34 AM: Message edited by: PeterJ ]
My opinion there are 2 kinds of music: Good and Bad I do love classic rock though! By the way today is Carlos Santana's 56th Birthday!
By the way today is Carlos Santana's 56th Birthday I hate Santana, Santana Sucked back then, he sucks today!!!!!!! What, me be ignorant? CvM
My favorite "old" bands AC/DC Rolling Stones Bill U2 isn't OLD!!!! They're still one of the greatest bands ever. I love thier style of music. DUCE
i'd agree with Duce, U2 isnt old, they keep reinventing themselves. I guess that means Aerosmith isnt old Either, lol
Ouch... If you define someone giving a negative opinion as "trouble", then so be it. If I give "trouble" and then through constructive debate somebody changes my opinion, it makes me VERY happy, for they would have educated the "ignorant". Isn't the exchange of sometimes differing views, what a forum is all about? Peter [ 20. July 2003, 11:40 PM: Message edited by: PeterJ ]
It is sad how many of the classic rock stars are dead and gone. Some of my favorites are the Grateful Dead,Beech Boys (Pet Sounds),early Bob Dylan,Janis Ian,Sandy Denny and Fairport Convention, The Chambers Brothers,(Time Has Come Today, the extra long version),and a great regional band that could have been great if it had a decent record label, The Thirteenth Floor Elevators. Early Motown groups are good to listen to also, as well as early James Brown and Issic Hayses.
Hello all - DUCE - You've got no argument with me their concerning U2. I have enjoyed there music for many a year, and they still are one of my favorite bands. But, in the terms of classic rock, one must look beyond the number of years that a band has been around. Yes, that does figure in to the equation periodically, however, one might also think about looking towards the future, and be of the thought that a "classic" track to be a piece that although might be laid down today, will still be appreciated many years from now. In this vein, I have added U2 as a classic rock institution. "The Joshua Tree", although perhaps a more commercial success, and a great cd ( do we dare say album any longer! ), "Achtung Baby" for myself, rates right up there along side it. Those Irish lads do put out great music. At least for me. Bill [ 21. July 2003, 09:02 AM: Message edited by: Bill Smith ]
