Its purpose is to diminish the possibility of resistance, and it seeks to fulfil this purpose by exploiting the elements of movement and surprise.

    …and then our luck changed. We came across a group of SS soldiers from the Hitler Youth and they fought like maniacs…they just wouldn’t surrender...we had to kill them all…it was terrible.

    (Ex-British Infantryman D-day commemorations 1994).
