Thats what i found rather unusual Fried-thats why I was saying that he only wore it on the uniform, he didn't serve in it... </font>[/QUOTE]I don't think he is even wearing an SS Algemeine uniform. He is always pictured in the army's black panzer uniform. Perhaps the totenkopf's threw off the author?

Well, difficult mistake to make, because the ASS black uniforms are in no way similar to Panzer uniforms, except for the colour... Not even the WSS Panzer uniforms are alike... The WSS Panzer uniforms didn't use the Panzer Totenkopf in the uniform, except for the berets or cpas, but those of the Army didn't wear Totenkopfs in the caps or berets, but in the uniform were the SS signs were used by the WSS Panzer men... And ASS and Kriegsmarine uniforms were the only black ones... Waffen SS uniforms were grey and a Panzer man wearing a normal uniform, whether WSS or Army wears the grey uniform with the pink branch collar tabs and epoulettes...

And Robin Lumsden is an accredited source on such matters, so he should closely.
As I said however, wearing it on the uniform may just mean he had one modified for himself to wear in the regular Panzerkorps.

Thanks. I would not have known had it not been for one of those trivia questions I recently encountered.

Here's the next one. What is this?

Both warm. Hint. It is a vehicle pennant but not of a state official. I will give it towards the end of today. [IMG]

    Carl:

U-181 was taken over by the Japanese Imperial Navy in May 1945 and became Japanese I-501 on July 15th 1945. The boat sirrendered at Singapore in August 1945 and was scuttled there on February 6th 1946.
