Who is credited with the 'invention'-introduction of the Japanese 'special attacks' (Kamikaze) tactics and when did the first mission took place?

 

They were volunteers I believe at Battle Philppines. Had to look up leader's name; Onishi?

 

The official Kamikaze force was created by Takajiro Onishi of the 1st Air Fleet and the first official attack took place at Leyte Gulf on October 21st, 1944.

The first official Kamikaze pilot to attack and die was vessel-Ensign Kuno, whose aircraft crashed into the sea.

 

Ahh....what was the name of first ship hit Martin??

 

The first ship hit was the US escort carrier Santee ( CVE-39) and the first to be sunk was the St Lo ( CVE-63 ), on October 25th.

Which British full Colonel supposedly 'vanished without trace' or 'was never seen again' at Arnhem - at least, until Martin Middlebrook's book was published in 1994 ?

At the time, the unfortunate Colonel was deputy commander, 1st Airlanding Brigade.....

 

I was holding off, because my question is lousy.

Colonel Barlow, went missing when he was sent in to town to try and coordinate efforts to take Arnhem Bridge.

The poor man was blown to smithereens (sp?).

You're quite right, it was Colonel Hilaro Barlow, killed by a mortar bomb on the 'lower road' at Arnhem. He is still listed as 'missing'.

A two part question for the Arnhem "grognards".

The 1st Airborne Reconnaissance Squadron possessed "two" very unique types of weapon not found in any other unit in the Division. Name both.

Second part. The Squadron was organised into HQ, Support, A, C and D Troops. Why no 'B' Troop?
