I know that the following Celebrities were in WWII: Clark Gable Glenn Miller Ted Williams Joe DiMaggio Can anyone name anymore?
David Niven and James Stewart also come to mind. Ernest Hemingway also was but had to perjure himself to say he wasn't.....
Lee Marvin, wounded in the Pacific, Charles Bronson was a B17 tail gunner, Patrick Moore flew with Bomber command as a Navigator, Roald Dahl; fighter pilot, Peter Butterworth from the carry on films was a single seater Pilot too (Fleet Air arm??), shot down at least once. And of course, James Doohan (Scottie from Star trek) landed at Juno and went on later to become a flyer. Cheers, Adam.
Donald Pleasance, who played in the Great Escape served in Bomber Command. He had first hand experience as a POW having been shot down. Robin www.156Squadron.com
Eddie Albert, charged with evacuating wounded on Tarawa, among other things. Peter Falk, memorized the eye chart for the Marines (one eye), discovered and so joined the Merchant Marine. There are many more, some you would not suspect did much. Andy Rooney was embedded in Burma and endured the same as most soldiers.
Roald Dahl ! Is he the writter ? If it's the case, he's the author of the very first book I read in my life !
The very same, so that's you, me, and god knows how many others started out on his books , He suffered a horrific crash involving fire which seems to have contributed greatly to his rather bleak outlook (and certainly adds authenticity to his creepy plane-related short stories). Wiki article seems to cover his wartime career quite well, never knew he finished the war as a Wing Commander(??)
Hitler's nephew seems like a sleezebag to me. I had forgotton about him until I looked at Za's list. http://www.answers.com/topic/william-patrick-hitler
A lot of actors served with honor. James Arness and Raymond Burr both were wounded in action. I liked that Gen Autry was the only pilot allowed to wear cowboy boots in combat. I was surprised that the list did not show Alistair MacLean, one of my favorite authors.
Ought to mention Spike Milligan, damaged by war (among other factors) but still one of the funniest men who ever lived. My favourite quotes from his wartime memoirs (THE reference document for all ww2 history. ): "I hope you bloody well crash!" (and they did) & from an NCO announcing that the lecture for today would be on Keats: "I bet not one of you ignorant c**ts even knows what a Keat is!"
Here's a few German actors who served in WWII. Wolfgang Priess. Johannes (Hannes) Messmer. (Was a POW) Til Kiwi. O.E. Hasse. Richard Muench. Werner Peters. Some who were "there" but came "here" John Banner (Sgt Schultz) from Hogan's Heroes. Werner Klemperer (Col. Klink ) from --guess you already know? ;-D Kurt Kreuger. Sadly, he fairly recently passed away. Can't think of the actors name just now but, the chap who played Sergeant Johann Sebastian Schultz in the great: Stalag 17. There are many others but I don't have them on hand to post here. Anyway, gives you an idea on who served.
seeing the little lady pictured in the first post made me think: if the USA had allowed females to captain bombers in WWII would we have seen naked hunks painted on their sides?
Dan Rowan, of "Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In" Fame was a P-40 pilot in Pacific, and was credited with 2 confirmed kills by war's end. No, he was not in the Flying Tigers, he was in the USAAF.
Interesting facts on James Stewart (1908-1997) - He flew with the 453rd bomber group over Europe and completed 20 successful missions, flying B-24's. When he retired in 68' he had the rank of a Brigadier General! Nav
