Do any of you have thoughts or speculation on the fates of the British sailors taken by Iran ? I would like to see British submarines get in some target practice on Iranian shipping until the sailors are released unharmed. If they are killed or harmed then it would be a good excuse to strike Iranian nuclear sites.
Iranians taking hostages... some things never change. This regime in Iran has to be delt with, we have let it go way too long.
Well, the usual suspects here have already started bleating about it being a put-up job by the British government to justify a "war of aggression" on those poor, innocent Iranians.......
Hmm, I reckon we 'let it happen' if you see what I mean. Think about it this way, the RN, with a Frigate on site, air support from several carriers at their call, allowed two Iranian vessels to kidnap 15 British personnel. If we had said 'look, if you take them we will fire' there is no way the Iranians would have carried on. That said, what is the alternative? A war we can't afford? Maybe it is all about internal Iranian politics, after all, they did just have an election etc.
This is the information age, informations we may or may not know. We do not know if the it is the will of the monopolies for such thing to happen or not.
The Iran government has told that they may put the soldiers in court for violating their borderline....How crazy can this get? They are really looking for blood from their noses?
AFAIK they were taken in one of the small rivers in the Tigris-Euphratis delta, really uncertain waters. Maybe the Brit sailors GPS was off, or the Iarnian's was, how do we know? Besides, I remember a similar situation a couple of years ago. Much posturing, much hullabaloo in the press, and the boys were quietly released a few weeks later. This is all for consumption of the Iranian press, no need to do a big noise about.
The problem is if the boys go to court....I do hope there will be none. let´s just hope it´s only for their own ego´s sake!
Actually the boarder is in the middle of the river and even our best GPS isn't accurate enough to track it. We really should pin the boarder down to something obvious like the river bank.
I wonder how Mojaheed sam ram dam flam is going to like English breakfast tea some morning in the near future ? am hoping Blair does not let this thing run out of of recourse(s) as Jimmy (Peanut) Carter did with the embassy take over. the Tehranian thug is just posing and testing the Allies nerve and reserve on purpose. E ~ time for my Velodrome
Not half so much as he is going to hate a full English breakfast! Can't help wondering what we can do, go to war? Well since the bulk of the Iranian population are apparently pro-US and we don't have enough troops, equipment and money to continue in Iraq and Afganistan, much less attack Iran.
guess Stefan that will depend on the Iranians as to what they will do with the British sailors/marines. If they are harmed, well your govt needs to act and quit playing the diplo game with those that do not want to associate themselves with the working table but live by the gun. If this goes to parading those through the streets of Tehran and then imprisoned for a year like the embassy personell then I think more than slapping the hands needs to be done. Yes this will bend many ears on this forum but . . . .......... and the Persian govt. says they are not using them as bargaining chips ........... bah !
Anyway we look at this situation, first off, the British will be blamed for agression and ultimeately, the USA and Isreal will be blamed for the whole mess. I still as yet, have heard if the U.N = Useless Nations, is going to take any REAL action. I highly doubt it though as they are all bark and no bite! At any rate, Bush really needs to help out Blair on this one. I sure hope that our friends in the U.K, are able to pull it off and get their comrades out of the hands of those fanatics.
~ think the British Carl can handle all this silliness without us......... I still await for Israel to turn Tehran into glass
Cant imagine what Bush can do, seems like he has done enough already. Now Putin on the other hand might have a card to play.
Personally, Iran needs to be put in it's place. Not to sound like a war monger but a diplomatic solution to this just is not the answer. We need to show Iran that their aggression will not be tolerated and the only way to put them in their place I believe is to respond with aggression. Given, this isn't the best time for doing so.
We should never had got in this mess in the first place, surrendering to a third rate force. Open fire on the Iranian dogs next time.
With what? We cannot afford a war and the Iranians know that. The army works on a 3 part rotation, theoretically 1 third on ops, 1 third training and 1 third on leave. Currently more like two thirds are on ops and not enouh troops are available to take part in training (as a result regular battallions need guys like me to make up the numbers on their pre-operational training exercises. We don't have the men or resources to keep things going in Afganistan, Iraq and Iran. The Iranians are trying to get at the US through us, interesting no? I agree with Richard though, should have blown the hell out of them when they moved in on our chaps.
