Stefan your country has been at war with us since moving in on Afgan. and Babylon and the region. Let's face reality this isn't going to go away, the culprits will be on your doorsteps in a big way soon enough just like the states in soon enough time

They already are, but my point is this, whatever the threat might be we can not afford to fight 3 wars at once. Hell, Iran isn't going to attack us, we do better to pull out of Iraq and have done with the whole afair.

guess I am a bit warped but piracy right about now in the Persian coastal waters sounds like a hoot. total disruption of their sea-faring lanes might just be a grand idea. Knocking on Syrias door might not be such a bad idea as well but that is another although intertwined notion that I have had for many years .............. 2 ยข

No worries Erich, I am all for the RN turning Iranian vessels into driftwood and can't wait to see what the military does, however I don't think folks over there understand the problems our military have. This poster made me laugh, it's not far from the truth:

Well said on turning them into a country made of glass.

Hi E, on the first one though, I fear that they too have been so brow-beaten that they might be incapable of doing much of anything. Both of us are already fighting with at least one hand tied behind their backs. Very similar to our Border Patrol Agents. I wonder what the pc crouds goal really is--included with theri trying to get everyone to join together so their can be a one world govt. I say ***k that, and also say that we need to drop out of the u.n as well as kick those $@%#^ the heck out of here.

yikes one world govt, think I heard something about a "new world order" from Bush sr. that about fried my butt then. in time it will happen but not now

sadly Stefans poster has hit a bad nerve in me as i remember Nam, what the Heck we were doing there, no-one but us ~ same goes if our English bro's decide to head back we are left with the bag of swill. It obviously does open another door which I am a bit reluctant to share. Hell will then be unleashed like the world has never seen

I am praying the Marines and Sailors will be out of that mess in quick time, this could drag on for too too long. you can bet even now the sights are being honed in on Tehran

Yep. The first time I ever heard that "one-world govt" line mentioned was when I was on American Airways flying to Germany back in Sept 2000. I thought that that was a strange thing for the Stewardess to say (she was on the intercom) and I was not really paying attention to what was being said, but do remember her saying something about a new world order.

Then fast forward a few years: I never gave that another thought until I heard something in the news as well as had a lengthy conversation with a neighbor of mine. I don't remember what we were actually talking about that had made me remember the world order thing but, when I thought about it, it literally made the hair on the back of my neck; stand at attention.

Now and then in the news, I hear someone mentioning that new world order. I would like to know what EXACTLY that is all about?

At any rate, it is easy to see that certain leaders are really pissing off many "Average American Citizens" with their BS and all of these "Average American Citizens" are daily, becoming more and more disgusted with what is going on. Also, I think they really need to start listening to those serving in our military. I talk with many many vets and active duty personnel, and they feel the exact same way as we here do.

I just barely remember what happened in Nam - being I was born in 1967. I do remember that when I was in Kindergarten, my class had a project for the year to write to soldiers serving in nam. I remember the replies we got--which were on a monthly basis. Those Gentlemen that we wrote to and sent things to, really were greatful for what we were doing. I remember that that was a time when the whole school participated in such a program. But now, you do not hear of that happening. What you hear is some jerko so-called professor/teacher--like that freak ward churchill, preach anti-American and Anti war crap to their students. And the sad thing is, is that many of those students are so stupid, to actually believe that garbage. >:-((

I too wish our military will get out of harms way soon, befor ethey are all totally stabbed in the back by freaks like nancy pelosi, john murtha and billery clinton. Speaking of murtha, I know all the US Marine recruiters here in town, and I had asked them what they thought about murtha. You know what they said--they all agreed that he was stabbing the military in the back (as well as those she-devils are doing) and also said that they see that all murtha is doing is also turning his back on the Marines. These guys do not consider murtha, a former Marine, but more of a back-stabbing scoundrel.

Sorry for hitting the wrong nerve but I'm afraid that is the way things are out here.

Think about it this way, 150 years ago we would have turned their capital to rubble and led an army through claiming the place for our own. We can't now, hell, we can hardly keep going with this. Much as I wish we would do what we used to do (i.e. put an army on the boarder and march to Tehran) we won't.

There are three things we can do now, 1. Diplomacy, 2. Send the SAS in, succeed and deny any involvement which is dubious at best, 3. Declare war which we can't afford.

This is what i understand has happened:

Theres are Military Force in Iran that is not 'fully under the control' of the Iranian Government (despite the fact that Marines are in Iranian Custody now...hmmm) and they seized the Marines. The Marines were only in what amounts to Zodiacs. The Iranians had 6 Vessels. They claim that the Marines were in Iranian Waters (so why didn't the 'official' Iranian Navy take part?). However, GPS and the Vessel the Marines boarded (Indian, i think) both claim/give proof that the Brits were 1.7 Miles away from the 'border' and still in Iraqi Waters. The Iranian Government also released a GPS Location that corresponds to this. A few days later, when they realized that, they changed their statement and moved the point 2 Miles East...putting it (in theory) .3 Miles inside Iranian Waters. Sounds a little fishy to me.

Now, I think the Iranians think they can get away with this given current situation in Iraq. It also stirs up the pot a little and draws attention to the psycho who rules Iran. Now, if it was up to me, i'd contact the Israeli Special Forces and Army and let them have a go at Iran...they'd teach that nut that the Holocaust did in fact happen.

I can see how the Iranians might see this as a bartering chip - it also takes attention away from their Nuclear Weapons.

I honestly wish that more people would join the US Army. I think numbers are at an all time low. Iran is more of a threat then Iraq was i believe- for starters there is proof that Iran is working on Nuclear Weapons. The Iranians are also supplying weapons and fighters into the Iraqi conflict. Based on the results of the Iraq/Iran War, the US military would have no problem knocking them out.

The Royal Navy has the capacity to hurt Iranian shipping and it has cruise missles to cripple the nuclear program. What is missing is someone who has balls like Margret Thatcher to launch the strikes. The current leaders are happy to use the sailors as pawns. That is also why more people do not join the US Army. They don't like to be used as pawns for morons like Bush. If he sent his daughters over there perhaps I would have a higher opinion of him.

well it seems that Blair and the govt are pushing the UN to take charge ............. poop that will probably achieve non-desireable results.

I see the senate just pushed through a bill to pull out in 120 days, Bushy has already said he will veto that. what is insane about this in a way is that my county is supported by ONC funds which the demos attached to this bill so naturally my county is now screwed. both the Oregon leaders rep/demo both signed the pull out bill and made it very clear that do not give a horse's ass about the people of Oregon especially in my southern portion.

    as my sig says ............

With what? Sorry guys, you are missing the fact that we currently have ALL our military assetts devoted to supporting your petty, sort sighted little conflicts, we have committed everything to Iraq and Afganistan and have no resources left with which to back up action against Iran. Christ, if it weren't for the fact that all our troops are wrapped up in a war we stupidly followed the US into we would be fine, the Iranians wouldn't have dared challenge us.

Now, you have a choice, let British troops pull out of Iraq and Afganistan to look after our own interests (in which case the US will no doubt get economically nasty like you did with Canada, nice) or let the government deal with this through diplomatic means.

Seriously, I don't think you guys understad ho much our military is stretched trying to help you guys, we have nothing left!

It wouldn't matter anyway; there are too many twisted ****s in this country ready to stab their own forces in the back. There are already accusations of "another illegal war" from the usual people. The UN could order military action against Iran and these scum would STILL parrot the same tripe they were force fed as playground revolutionaries.
The BBC forums are full of "British" people claiming the sailors were spying and that the Iranians were perfectly entitled to capture them; what do you do when faced with THAT level of stupidity?
Maybe when all the kid-on "socialists" were crying themselves to sleep after apologising for the Potato Famine, slavery etc, they should have considered exactly how weak and vacuous they appear to psychos like the Iranians.

Gordon, those of us who know what side the BBC bread is buttered know full well the BBC is a liberal corporation. They suck up to the muslims and to show Israel in a bad light. As for the BBC forums well what more can I say.

I am also sick of this liberal political correctness lobby that sticks the knife in on our forces out in the ME. These liberal people are traitors to our country.

Here's the news item on that BBC report.

Stefan is right. The British army is in no fit state to do anything to Iran... It cant cope with what is asked of it at the present. I suspect my father is spinning in the grave at whats has become of his beloved army. Sad to say their is little that we could do... But Im not really sure why we are in Iraq in the first place let alone talk of attacking Iran, unless of course we just want to get even more of our guys killed. Its a bloody awful mess... Just glad I aint there.

All logic dictates a drawn out game of political brinkmanship as the Iranian government tries to get one over on us 'Old Colonials'... We have messed around with their country in the past. I dont like it but I see little choice in our actions as they are limited to a diplomatic response.

Talk of attacking them is pointless. With what? Plus we dont want another Special Forces fiasco like the US in the 80's which is perhaps what the Iranians want.

I also dont see what good turning Tehran into glass would do other than cause the death of lots of innocent men, women and children. If thats something you support then Im glad you dont have control of any nukes! Lets face it... I doubt your average Iranian really gives a monkeys whats going on, he probably just wants to get on with his life like the rest of us.

All that said, I dont like it. But what can you do? As much as I would like to see a British sub sail into the area and lob a few torpedos around and do a 'Belgrano' on the Iranian Navy it wont happen with that spineless weasel in charge of HM Government. I also fail to see what use Mr. Bush is. Then again I fail to see what use he is in general other than a waste of oxygen.

The captain of Cornwall had to get in touch with london before he could intervene and then found the waters too shallow for him to appraoch, the reason the light vessels had been launched. The GPS cordinates are based on the stationary ship they boarded and are clearly in Iraqi waters by 1.7 miles, trouble is Iran doesnt recognise the same border as we do... Its all just a political game to test the will power of their opponents in much the same way that the whole nuclear programme Iran has developed has been.

No-one can arfford a war with Iran, not even the US.

Unfortunately, I think some in Iran may realise that...

Hopefully our guys and one girl will get released and be able to return to Devonport safe and sound.

Perhaps the lesson will be to next time give the Iranian gunboats a little broadside if they get too close...

"Based on the results of the Iraq/Iran War, the US military would have no problem knocking them out."

Basing your study of an armies performance on a war that ended nearly twenty years ago is a big mistake.

Bit like thinking the German Army in WW2 would be the same as the one in WW1...

Never underestimate an opponent and never think that technology will give you the edge... I think we only need to look at Iraq to prove that the US war machine isnt the all-conquering Superpower some would like to think.

I fail to see how the US could fight a insurgent war in Iraq and a conventional war in Iran. Im not being anti-American here but I think you need to take a long hard look at the real state of your armed forces and its global deployments and commitments.

I highly doubt that would happen again. We have learned from our mistakes during Operation Eagle Claw. Now, we have the USSOCOM (United States Special Operations Command) to provide cooperation between the Special Operations Forces of each branch and we also now have the daring pilots of the 160th SOAR to get us in and out. Not to mention now we have bases on either side of Iran in Iraq and Afghanistan. That is not a luxury we had back in the '80s.
