Because everyone on this forum just loves talking about World War Two, my question is if anyone of you also buys a lot of book about it? And are there any other periods in history that interesses you? And do you have books about it. The books that I bought today are: *Spain's road to empire: the making of a world power 1492-1763(Henry Kamen) *Napoleon in Russia(Alan Palmer) *Target Switzerland: Swiss armed neutrality in World War Two(Stephen E. Halbrook) *Battle of the airfields: Operation Bodenplatte 1 January 1945(Norman Franks) *SS Das Reich: the history of the second SS-Division 1939-45(Gregory L. Mattson)
I have been known to buy the odd book or two about WWII ( ) and I just have no room whatsoever to keep books about other periods ! But I still have a collection of ( now very rare ) WWI books, amassed about 20 years ago, plus a large number of books by and about T E Lawrence ( who a lot of people seem to forget was a WWI figure ).
I would highly recommend "The World World War II Visual Encyclopedia." It is really good for just looking up random things. The best part is it only costs $24.95! Here is the book on Amazon.com
I've bought too many books the last 40 years......so my wants are very specific now, uslly with the WW 2 air-war. No room is the big problem but I buy specific, dealing with my research needs. Other than that possibly an interesting Napoleonic title or two comes my way. Generic materials do not interest me in the slightest........ ~E
Hey Erich, did you ever get a copy of that book I told you about? the one that was about the great cavalry charges of the Napoleanic War? Just-a-wonderin Cousin.
Carl no I did not friend. Sounds like a good one though to curl up by the home fires with ! maybe back in January when I am back to full time work. ~E~
I have so many books on military history, I had to convert one of the barns at my house in France into my library! The collection largely covers WW1 and WW2, but a lot of other periods of well, with a big overflow at my UK house as well. Thankfully, I have a sympathetic wife, who buys as many as I do! You can never have enough books... never!!
I'll be second Martin so move over a bit pal ! seems like I have heard that phrase before......never enough books........like somewhere at over 1000 times too true
Hiya, In the process of reading: The Popish Plot The Struggle for Sovereigny: English political Tracts of the 17th Century vol.1 The Ancient Celts The Celtic World The Industrial Revolution Industry & Empire Preferred period is Mediaeval, but always had a thing about the World Wars. Regards, Gordon
Erich, you better get it while its still available. You KNOW how Greenhill Pubs are? They get a rare gem printed, (never printing enough copies) sending ONE copy to a large bookstore where it ultimately gets buried by all the other titles and VERy quickly. Then it gets forgotten about for months on end collecting dust bunnies. Then that ONE person finds it and "POOF," it's gone forever. In that time period, the darn Pub Company no longer makes prints and then you wind up searching for ages not finding a copy until you least expect it (likely at a time when you can't afford to buy it) and WHAMMO, there it is. For sale on some book site as an OOP for $300.00. I aint joking either. This same thing almost happened to me on the excellent now WAYYYYYYYYYY OOP book: German Army Order Of Battle 1944: The Directory, Prepared by Allied Intelligence, of Regiments, Formations and Units of the German Armed Forces. Barnes and Nobles had a few on their shelves for at least two years. I saw it many many times and looked at it often. Never buying it as I always bought others. Then when I decide I wanted to buy it, they just a few days before, sent back to Greenhill, the last copy of the book they had. I was told the only way to get a copy was to find it online somewhere. I looked at all the places they suggested and found copies of this book ranging in price from $150.00 to $300.00. At that time, B&N employed what they called: "Book-finding Specialists" this one was named Heather. Luckily, Heather found a copy for me at cover price, which was $30.00. (Now out of breath) that's more words I typed since I knowed ya.
well it is interesting since I do have access to over 20 different book dealers, dealing in the OOP titles if it does come to that. You are probably right though but what is nice about search engines and having interneted friends is that you can always find a copy of something usually, but may have to PAY the price for it. ~E just becoming too specialized
