Ive done another post on my Grandad Harold or Harry Thomas George Carr in Military service forum about the uniform he is wearing as just found out he was in the army. Im trying to find records for him but havent found anything. As dont have any reg info etc.. its proving difficult. Here is a photo of him that ive recently been given, he is the tall 1 on the right and on the back of photo it says 14th June 1949 Bottesford (think) but Bottesford was closed in 1948 someone has said on other post. My Grandad was born Jun. 4, 1929 and died March 4th 1999. Can anyone help me please, im trying to see if he does have a medal card or anything else at all. Thankyou Joanne
Hi Joanne you can still ask for a check to be made to see if a Service Record is available. With the information that you have, and proof that you are the next of kin, you can ask the Army Personnel Centre to check their files. You have his full name and his DoB. If they don't have a file or unable to find any information then they sometimes don't charge. Provide them with as much information as possible. And request any information they hold to be photocopied, rather than requesting a summary (a number of people on another forum have found the summaries to be pretty useless in comparison). Here the contact details and instructions: Service records - Army The only thing is that looking at the picture, and the date, it seems that he was probably serving his 2-year National Service.
Hi, Thankyou for the link, thats the same one i was given on the other post i done, ok its worth a go, can i email them with the info i have or do you think its best i write to them? So you think the photo is for serving a 2 year National Service? would there still be a record for that? does that mean he was called up, sorry to many questions but im useless with all this. It's difficult to say whether he was called up for National Service or "War Service" because the date of the photograph falls on the change over date. War Service existed between 1939 and 1948, and National Service existed between 1949 and 1960. It is sometimes known as Peacetime Service, though this misnomer because a number of NS men served in places like Malaya and Korea.
