Hello there, Im trying to find out which Luftwaffe nightfighter units were in operation in the Amsterdam area on the night of 30/31 January 1944. Im particularly interested to know which pilot/schwarm claimed victories that night and where they occured. Two Lancaster bombers were lost from 97 Squadron that night on their way home from Berlin. The one Im interested in was Shot down by a Bf-110 five miles south of Amsterdam. I know its a big ask, but I'll settle for just knowing what units were patrolling there that night. Many thanks for any help offered. Best Regards, H.
Hello, Hanglands... If you wade right through this old thread, you may find something of interest..... http://www.ww2f.com/information-requests/14269-who-shot-j-johnnie-down.html
Absolutlely just what I was looking for! Thank you for that link. I suppose I should've acquainted myself with the 'Search' function before the 'New thread' one! Got a small chunk of JB 695 hanging in the hallway which I picked up at the RAF Upwood 1940s weekend recently. Ive attached a photo of it, in amongst some good company. Im off work for a couple of weeks now, and hope to get up to the museum at Wickenby in this time. Once again many thanks. Regards, H.
It was just coincidence - JB659 remains the only Lancaster which I have researched in depth. Since the last posting on the 'Who shot...?' thread, I've had one or two other e-mails from Continental researchers and in fact one of the smaller aviation museums in Holland put on a 'Schnaufer' display in 2006 which contained pieces of JB659. So long after the event, one can never be absolutely, totally sure whose victory this was, but it really is now accepted that Schnaufer was most likely the victorious pilot. Hinchliffe's biography of him is well woth reading and gives you something of an insight into what sort of man he was . I too have a number of relics of JB659 and never look at them without thinking of the loss of the crew and the tragic circumstances for the Dutch civilians involved. But the crew of the Lancaster were doing their job - and Schnaufer was doing his. Just one aircraft loss out of so many.....
Hanglands, this a nice way to put relics on display. I never thought about a nice painted background amidst pictures and frames. I usually nail the parts on walls , but your background really makes it look precious.
