That can resume what the Germans thought:

"I've got a job, I've got a house, my sons have school, streets are safe and pretty, I don't mess up with those nazi pigs so I'm better than ever. Thanks to our glorious Führer. It's a pity the treatment of Jews, but what can I do? If only the Führer knew…"

yeah I know your meaning Fried, but who made the Rainbow and why ? man I hate the impersonality of the web..........Steffen yes I agree it would be hard to seperate oneself from the given norm. As it was in the early 30's Germany was getting itself out of the war-depression of the WW 1 and no other but the ugly Austrian was blamed for the success. anyone ever think that der Führer was possessed ? sorry if this is taking a turn for OT

You're right MHN. I just tried to be "clever" here. [IMG]

    Meanings for the Rainbow Bridge:

    - The Rainbow Bridge is the symbol of the "Antakarana", which is the name given to the stream of consciousness we build when we are purposefully integrating into our Soul and then Monad. It is the "road we build to heaven".

    - A covenant is established and God seals it by placing a rainbow in the sky: "This is the sign that I set for the covenant between Me and you, and every living creature with you, for all ages to come. I have set My bow in the clouds, and it shall serve as a sign of the covenant between Me and the earth" (Gen. 9.12 -13).

    - According to the esteemed biblical scholar Nahum Sarna, the rainbow in the ancient world was a fairly common "symbol of divine bellicosity and hostility" (http://www.jrf.org/recondt/noah-2000-cohen.html)

    - Norse and Germanic myths speak of a "rainbow bridge" that links the worlds of Midgard and Asgard. Heimdal, who is responsible for creating the three races as told in the "Song of Rig", is the guardian of this rainbow bridge and his domain is between the worlds.

    - The Rainbow Bridge is a bridge that links the world of man with the world of God. This Covenant is the Covenant of Baha'u'llah that links Midgard, the world of man, to Asgard, the world of the gods. The gods of Norse legends refer to the Divine Manifestations and other Promised Ones of God. There are two types of Covenants: the greater and the lesser Covenant. Baha'u'llah was prophesied in the greater Covenant. Baha'u'llah's Covenant is the lesser Covenant. It sets forth His House of Justice and names His successors for the establishment of His House of Justice, but Hel and the "Hands" broke Baha'u'llah's Covenant. Heimdall is the One prophesied in all the Holy Books, that is, through the greater Covenant, to establish Asgard, the New Jerusalem spoken of in Revelation. (http://www.bahaifaith.net/heimdall.htm)

    - In Japan, Iris's rainbow bridge is called the road of the gods. May is Iris month, with Boy's Doll Day celebrated on May fifth. Young men drink Iris tea and bath in an Iris infusion to promote health and fertility. Because of the sword shaped leaf and the blossom that resembles female genitalia, the Iris is the symbol of the male and female principles united. (http://salmonriver.com/words/nancy/maia.html)

And finally a beautiful poem about the rainbow bridge:

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.

There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.

There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.

The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; his eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

"The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people
from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus
becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress
dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension,
the truth becomes the greatest enemy of the state."

    - Dr. Joseph M. Goebbels - Adolf Hitler's propaganda minister

    Something to think about...Hmmmm...

Just like to add that Hitler was not voted into being the fuhrer, only a few rich right wing bankers put him into power.
Yes he won the 1933 election, but not even half the German population (not even counting the ones that didnt vote) voted for Hitler to become Reichskanselier, not fuhrer.
He then took more power then the people had given him trough the elections.
Yes many, probably most germans supported Hitler, at least in the beginning.
But in Germany 100% of the media was controled by the state, any rebellion, strikes, demonstrations, etc, would be unheard of, would be covered up.
Sadly they did this so well that much of the German resistance will probably remain unknown for ever.
Communists and socialists were even arrested before they even had a chance to rebel.
Its unknown how many people simply dissapeared after acting against the nazis.
The fight against German resistance started in 1933, at least 6 years before any of the other countries got involved.
By then probably most of the resistance within the reich had been wiped out.
And of course by the time German people realised they had to act, it was already too late.
Its hard to fight the enemy from within if they live next door, work in the shops you go to, teach your children in school, direct traffic, etc.
I just want to say is that there was more resistance against the nazis in Germany then we will ever know.

    Just a few are mentioned here;

Welcome to the forums, Marloes. Hope you enjoy yourself here. ;)

About your post though, I have some things to comment.

Whilst it is true that the Nazi Party didn't get an overwhelming percentage in any elections, not even those made after the seizure of power, it is also true that an overwhelming majority of the German people voted in the referendums to support the régime's actions, no matter how 'fixed' the results were. The annexation of Austria, by example, showed pretty well that Austria was not raped by Nazi Germany; she threw herself glady innto her hands and openly contributed to Germany's crimes and actions during the following years.

By the way. Hitler was not voted to become chancellor. He was appointed that by the democratically elected President of the Republic. Later, when he mixed the charges of President and Chancellor in one, he was backed by the people in a referendum too. We have to remember that it was a popular (populist) dictatorship, and Hitler very well knew it.

A support which increased to Messianic patological dimensions by 1941. And which rapidly crumbled after 1943.

Quite an incompetent resistance if I may say… never really organised, never coherent in ideology… Beck, Halder and the 1938 plot inside the General Staff is a good example: they were afear of war with Great Britain and France, but they certainly would not have, in case of overthrowing Hitler, gave up Austria, the Saar or the Rhineland, nor would have they given up to their re-armament, going back to what Versailles stipulated.

Yes. But in this case how it was done is more important than the fact itself. The Police State and the terror machine worked through massive popular consent and co-operation and moved by all possible reasons, except ideological. In the same way as in all true totalitarian societies.

No. It was never too late. Didn't Archbishop Von Gahlen in 1941 or Rosenstraße in 1943 showed that something could be done if the police faced popular discontent?

Maybe it was too late in Spring 1945 when SS, Army, Navy, Luftwaffe, Hitlerjugend and Volkssturm personnel were just shooting and killing anyone for nothing… but in 1939, 1940, 1941?

The Germans were not going to do anything, as long as they were winning…

No, it is very easy. That is precisely how Germany got rid of its mortal enemies: that is how the political opposition was wiped out and how the Jewish population, among other minorities, were segregated and prepared for extermination.

Story about one battle provided by brave Waffen SS soldiers

Around 2 p.m. on 10 June 1944, four days after the Allied invasion of Normandy, approximately 150 Waffen-SS soldiers entered the tranquil village of Oradour-sur-Glane in the Limosin region of south central France. For no apparent reason, Hitler's elite troops destroyed every building in this peaceful village and brutally murdered a total of 642 innocent men, women and children, an unexplained tragedy which has gone down in history as one of the worst war crimes committed by the German army in World War II.

On that beautiful Summer day, the defenseless inhabitants of Oradour-sur-Glane were rudely dragged out of their homes, including the sick and the elderly, and ordered to assemble on the Fairgrounds on the pretext of checking their identity papers. After all had been assembled, they were forced to wait in suspense with machine guns pointed at them. Then the women were separated from the men and marched a short distance to the small Catholic Church, carrying infants in their arms or pushing them in baby carriages.

The men were then ordered to line up in three rows and face a wall that bordered on the Fairgrounds. A short time later, they were randomly divided into groups and herded into six buildings: barns, garages, a smithy, and a wine storehouse. Around 4 p.m., a loud explosion was heard which was interpreted by the men to be a signal for the SS soldiers to begin firing their machine guns. Most of the men were wounded in the legs and then burned alive when every building in the village was set on fire at around 5 p.m. By some miracle, 6 of the men managed to escape from one of the burning barns and 5 of them survived. They testified in court about this completely unjustified German barbarity against blameless French civilians.

The Oradour church only had a seating capacity of 350 persons, but 245 frightened women and 207 sobbing children were forced inside at gunpoint while the men were still sitting on the grass of the Fairgrounds, awaiting their fate. The women and children were locked inside the church while the SS soldiers systematically looted all the homes in this prosperous farming village. Then around 4 p.m. a couple of SS soldiers carried a gas bomb inside this holy place and set it off, filling the church with a cloud of noxious black smoke. Their intention had been to asphyxiate the women and children in the House of God, but their plan failed.

As the women and children pressed against the doors, trying to escape and struggling to breathe, SS soldiers then entered the crowded, smoke-filled church and fired hundreds of shots at the hapless victims, while other SS men stood outside ready to machine-gun anyone who attempted to escape. The soldiers fired low inside the church in order to hit the small children. Babies in their prams were blown up by hand grenades, filled with gas, that were tossed into the church. Then brushwood and straw was carried into the stone church and piled on top of the writhing bodies of those that were not yet dead. The church was then set on fire, burning alive the women and babies who had only been wounded by the shots and the grenades. The clamour coming from the church could be heard for a distance of two kilometers, according the Bishop's office report.

The fire inside the church was so intense that the flames leaped up into the bell tower; the bronze church bells melted from the heat of the flames and fell down onto the floor of the church. One SS soldier was accidentially killed by falling debris when the roof of the church steeple collapsed.
