Was a fan of this iconic picture, the worn desperation in the German's face. "For the fuhrer!" he might say, but the war is clearly over.
My scanner is not up, so I can't show you, but my Favorite picture is Rommel inspecting Troops manning the Atlantic wall, one looks Chinese and the other is a Turban-wearing Indian!
The photo of Leutnant Finsterwalder was taken at Juaye Mondaye in Normandy on 10/6/1944 he was an officer of I / Panzer regt 6 which was part of the Panzerlehr Division in Normandy and formed the Panther Abt. regards Paul
I have two favorites: The first USS Yorktown and USS Hammann both being torpedoed by the same spread. Three tracks are clearly visable. The second being a B-25B taking off from the USS Hornet for the Doolittle Raid.
The pic of the Yorktown/Hammann torpedo hits is from a diorama. See this link Destroyer Photo Index DD-412 USS HAMMANN
Thanks Jeff, I guess that would explain the other ones i seen with three or all four of the Japanese carriers at Midway. Those ones always confused me because no Pilot reported seeing more than two at any time.
I'm unable to find my favorite image of the war, so describe it: It was taken during the Paris uprising in August 1944. A still from a motion picture camera taken from a window above the streets. A lone German soldier has just been shot, and a man and woman reach the body to take his weapon and ammunition. The frozen still shows the German lying there sprawled on the pavement, and the woman, on her knees, is handing the rifle to her male companion. That scene just give me chills when I see it. A very symbolic and dramatic image.
Another dramatic photo. 1944- the Japanese crew members of the aircraft carrier Zuikaku. The carrier has listed to her side and sinking, yet the crew is standing at attention saluting ther flag as it is lowered. Over half of them would go down with the ship shortly after this image was taken.
The first photo is not a wartime pic, it is a still from a russian war movie, think it is called "See and remember"
I saw the pic and thought it looked too staged. I was about make that comment and saw the above as I was scrolling down.
Great shot. What's that Russian military maxim? "The best form of Anti-aircraft defence is a tank parked on the enemy's runway". Cheers, Adam
