From the photo, it appears to be one 40mm Bofors, single manually operated mount, and three 20mm Oerlikons.

It is a US Ammunition ship during the Invasion of Anzio or Salerno.

Hit by a German Guided Bomb.

But no clue of what name right NOW.

A bit more historical significance than my Dad's boat.

 

Ok, I can see a hint it in order. Almost found herself in the wrong place at the wrong time in 1941. NOT Pearl Harbor.

 

US Coast Guard cutter, Algonquin? class. 165'. Based on the hint I will say USCGC Modoc which briefly encountered the Bismarck as he was trying to dodge the Royal Navy after sinking Hood. We were neutral at the time, which prevented Modoc from disappearing, but if I recall correctly did not prevent her reporting the sighting.

I work in Wilmington, Delaware, USA, and when I started here in the early 1990s a similar ship, the Mohawk, was tied up in the river as a museum ship. Immediately adjacent to her was a parking lot, only a few feet above water level. After one big storm, the river overflowed the parking lot, creating the curious picture of several cars sitting in about a foot of water, then a ship.

 

Modoc it is. Almost fired on by the Norfolk, almost hit by Bismarck's AA fire. Little ship in the wrong playground!

 

May I suggest we take a chance identifying this photograph?

He's a hint, it was NOT photoshopped.

 

As I recall, the USS Pope getting smacked off of Java.

 

I believe Pope is correct - literally blown out of the water!

The picture is similar to the USS Pope, but the story and picture depict another vessel that is in a book called, "A Blue Sea of Blood".

 

That picture is featured on the jacket of The fleet the gods forgot and refered to as USS Pope. The picture it is reported as captured from the Japanese and archived as Nathional Archives 80-G-178997. A Blue Sea of Blood tells the story of sister ship USS Edsall lost in very similar circumstances. The text refers to the existence of captured Japanese film of the sinking of Edsall and the picture does look like it could be from a film rather than a still

Hard to say which ship it is with that picture quality.
