I've always loved Westerns - from Rio Bravo through Hombre to The Wild Bunch and Butch Cassidy plus The Long Riders ( I even enjoy Heaven's Gate....) ...... People keep saying 'That's it, the Western is dead' but last night I went to see The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford and greatly enjoyed it. Cetainly not the usual idea of a rip-roaring Western, it's very (almost over- ) long but quite beautifully photographed and acted ( especially by Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck ). Luckily, I saw it at a 'real' Cinema Club with a big screen and a serious audience ( no popcorn, burgers or giggling... ). The guns really sounded like guns - not firecrackers.... So - I still love Westerns...!
I will look for it where I live and try to see it. Thanks ! I wish they would make a good horror movie in a European castle that has a good plot. Something really gothic. Can anyone recommend one that is good ? I don't care for the modern versions of Dracula.
People have been predicting the demise of the Western for decades, and then along comes a movie like "Pale Rider" or "Unforgiven." The prophets are quiet for a time, then repeat the same vision of doom. Fortunately, they continue to be wrong. JT
I have seen every Eastwood Western - more than once ! But Clint is getting a little long in the tooth for such things now....it's good to see others continuing the tradition.
Now Martin, you did this knowing full well that you are going to get Carl wound up, the way he loves Westerns and especially a certain swaggering actor known for his westerns..
I love westerns! And while Clint Eastwood mad some GREAT westerns, he pales in comparison to the remarkable John Wayne!
Jeff, you bet your boots on that one pardner; I do love my Westerns. I have over 600 of them on VHS tape and are trying to find a way to get them all on DvD. I'd say about 400 of the ones i now have, have never been released on VHS, BETS, Laser Disc and DvD; and most of them probably never will be. Speaking of the ""Pasta"" Western mentioned above (im not trying to ruin anyones fun in watching or liking them but, those are the kinds of Westerns that Duke refused to make and usually; did not like. If you want a good explanation for Dukes reasons for not likinig these more ""modern"" type of Westerns; you will please have to go here: JWMB - The Official "UN-Official" John Wayne Message Board or here: John Wayne to get your answers. There is a man who is a member at both DukeWayne and JohnWayne. coms (respectively) who was an "extra" in four of Dukes movies including the ""Cavalry Trilogy"" Fort Apache, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon and Rio Grande, as well as another title which name I can't remember at this time. This man also was in a few James Stewart Westerns as well. The Gents name is William Brooks. If he can't answer your questions (to which i've never seen him not be able to answer any question) then just go to John Wayne.com and ask another Gentleman by the name of: DakotaSurfer any questions and you will get any and all answered. D.S. was hired by Ethen Wayne (one of John Wayne's sons) to run the official website. Ethan Wayne owns and runs Wayne Enterprises. Unfortunately, Gretchen Wayne (John Waynes Daughter-in-Law) is unfortunately unapproachable. Gretchen Wayne on Michaels deatha few years ago; now controls Batjac - which was John Waynes Production Company. Sorry to make a long posting but, I can't help it when it comes to anything to do with Duke, his movies and Westerns in general. PS, for any out there who care, Duke did not like the movie: High Noon, because he felt that it was somewhat derogatory to heroes and the American West and it's values.
Did you know that at one time or another before Duke passed away, that Clint Eastwood had approached Duke with an offer or two to work together making a Western. All I know about this project, is that Duke was going to be Clints Father in the movie. However, because Duke was very ill from Cancer, is the main reason why they never worked together. Also, both Duke and Clint happened to "rub elbows" several times and they were friends. Both reportedly visited each other on the set of a movie they were making. One could only wonder at would have been-had they made a movie or two together? PS, coming out sometime soon, is a new Western that was filmed by: Harry Carey Jr (who was a frequent co-star in many of Dukes films) that is called: Comanchie Stallion. Last I heard, it was in production and is scheduled to be released sometime in the near future. For fans of Westerns, Comanchie Stallion was directed in the "John Ford STyle" by Harrey Carey Jr. As well, if you are a fan of the long-running TV series: Gunsmoke, the leading man in that series: James Arness, came out of retirement just to make this movie. Arness said that he will not be doing another project. Did you know that James Arness also co-starred in a few of Dukes movies including: Hondo (my all-time most favorite Western) Big Jim McCLain (a sort of Cold War type movie) and Island in the Sky - which is a movie about a downed crew who is lost somewhere in the vast reaches of Canada or somewhere, and they struggle for survival while trying to figure out how they can be rescued.
Hi Kai, Scott, Kai, i've never had the pleasure of watching any Eastern (Westerns) yet. However, speaking of...I have a friend from the DukeWayne forums who lives in Eastonia who is going to be sending me copies of a few Easterns (Westerns) when they get set-up after they move house sometime early next year. I have no clue what i'll be getting or how many titles. All the same, im looking forward to watching them. Scott, only with meatballs. ;-)) And im not talking about Rocky Mountain Oysters ;-)
I've always been a big fan of Sergio Leone's Spaghetti Westerns. Most recently though, I thought Open Range (2003) with Kevin Costner and Robert Duvall was pretty good, especially in HD
OWCH, you mentioned that name: Kevin C*****r! The only movie that I really liked him in was: "The Untouchables." Robert Duval is OK but im not a big fan of his.
Sauerkraut Westerns? I wonder if those would be better or worse than Spaghetti Westerns??? BIG JAKE!!! The Duke and Maureen O'Hara! What a pairing! What a Lady! Poise, presence, and beautiful! "Call me Daddy one more time..."
