TA 152 this wasn't called simply "Gulag" was it ? if so I have seen it twice but do not remember W. Nelson in it. I got to think about a cousin in the Wehrmacht-Heer that was captured and served 7 years in a Soviet gulag only to return to Germany by cart and die along the way ......... a bit disturbing
I found it ! It was from 1982 and called, Coming out of the ice. Willie has a line in it that says he is going to p*ss on the North Pole one day. Coming Out of the Ice (1982) (TV) I don't know where I got the top of the world title from. Senility setting in ?
Better than reality (anything but reality) TV. At least they used MG 34/42s, MP 40s, K 98s, Half-tracks, Pz IIIs, and the Russians had genuine machine guns/rifles as well. Some of the "shooting" (especially Major King) was beyond belief. Jumping/running/falling/Long Distance head shots ? ok The action was good, like many others (fast forward the stupid parts). Hollywood knows children & women have money to spend, so they make them major players.....for the draw. They know we'll watch it anyway (and fast forward the stupid parts).
My 1973 first-edition hardback copy has a b/w dust jacket photo showing a partly wrecked statue of a group of children in a "ring around the rosey" pose in the foreground, and some ruined (on fire?) buildings in the background.
You are certainly not alone there; I would donate at least one limb for the chance. Film's like this are ruined by 'The formula' which dictates that there must be a romance with a rumpy pumpy scene at some point in order to attract women to the film and make money at the box office. That Pearl Harbour rubbish suffered from the same disease; both could and should have been great movies. Even so the scenery was good, there were some nice vehicle shots and some flavour of the place and time are experienced.
The Russian Battlefield - ENEMA AT THE DOOR: an Foreigner Will Not Notice, a Russian Will Not Forgive Sloniksp this is cool everyone should check it out.
If I'm not mistaken, even though the Craig book and the movie shared the same title, the movie was based on a war novel called "War of the Rats". Amazon.com: War of the Rats: Books: David L. Robbins And any movie with Rachel Weisz can't be all bad...mmmmm.
I don't know, I like the movie, but any historian will say that Stalingrad battle sequence was inaccurate. Although on the plus side Ed Harris rules the movie and you get to see Rachel Weisz's butt.
It might be, but I watched the special featues on how the movie was made and Jean-Jacques Annaud said that there was a paragraph in a "very thinck history book" about the duel between Bruno Koenig and Vassilij Zaitsev. He says it was his primary inspiration for the movie; I know it sounds odd, one paragraph out of a huge book, but watch the special features if you own the DVD and see.
As it's now almost 10 years eek since this movie was out I just sat down and watched a DVD of it. I still reckon it hasn't aged well - the acting seems to have got hammier, not better. Best for me is the guy playing Paulus who seems to have walked in from another movie ( Downfall ). But the British 'Russian' trio just seem so unconvincing. As pointed out before in the thread, some very make-believe aerial CGI sequences, too. Must say, though, that quite a lot of care seems to have taken with weapons, uniforms, vehicles, etc. It still has some good moments, but it's not a great movie of Stalingrad.......
Yeah, its a good action movie, based in an historical setting. But its not an historical movie by any means. If you watch it again, pay close attention to the part where they're making their way through the factory. There's a shot looking up at Zeitzev, and you see two smokestacks in the background through a hole in the wall. On the smokestacks, there's two guys climbing up. Wearing orange vests. In broad daylight. In a war zone. LOL Later, though...those two smokestacks explode dramatically. Darn stage crew!!!!
It's a little-known historical fact that Health & Safety Regulations had to be followed, even in the depths of one of history's most desperate battles. VIth Army could have suffered a terrible fine !
