Talk about an obsession. Buying 40 acres just to see if indeed this battery existed. Also, is burying concrete bunkers standard practice in france?

Dunno, but quite a few AA sites in Britain were buried postwar.

If I recall, you posted a story of another Brit purchasing some land where he found a buried bunker full of German Equipment all intact. Is this the same bloke?

Aye, it appears to be. It's almost exactly a year since the story on the Maisy battery's revelation.

I have spoken to Garry Sterne (he is a regular at militaria fairs) on a number of occasions about the Maisy Battery and his progress with it.
One of the factors for it taking so long to open the battery to the public was a less than cooperative local mayoress, she apparently 'dragged her feet' on the relevant paperwork and decision making that would enable the site to open.
On my last visit to Normandy i had planned to visit the Battery, but due to time costraints i never did. Hopefully, i will get to it this year.

Yes, very interesting, but the missing tank support is still the main fact, I think. I don´t think during landing you can really expect no resistance whatsoever....that´s why you need the tanks after the artillery has done its part.

Seen it, I think it's the one about why the tanks failed to get to the beach. I may be wrong but I did taped one with the same title couple of years ago, never the less I shall be watching.

Omaha beach: 3,000 killed, wounded and missing on day one

Operation mercury: ( Crete ) 6,453 killed, missing, wounded and captured during a week or so ( German admitted losses ).

Call it what you like, I think.....both figures from wikipedia.

I thought massacre an odd choice of words to describe it as well, different from let's say the "Malmedy Massacre", but I get their point alot of people died, anyway I would really be interested in seeing that map!

    Quoting from the article:

Collector Gary Sterne was browsing through memorabilia at a miltaria fair when a tattered, annotated map fell out of a pair of trousers which had belonged to a U.S. serviceman. It featured a spot marked "area of high resistance," and Mr Sterne decided to visit Normandy and examine the point overlooking the beach.
Now, am I the only one that would like a little explanation of this.

What was the soldier doing with a wadded up map of Omaha beach in his pocket? And did he carry it with him throughout the entire war? Who owned the trousers in the first place?

I for one, would be real interested in hearing the provenance of these trousers.

(... and, to confirm that the wearer of said trousers was actually AT Omaha beach, one should inspect the seat of trousers for stains!...)

Interesting story, though .... let us know about the TV special.

    -whatever

If I could grab the telly tonight I could be able to watch it, unfortunatly my sister would probably be watching her beloved dancing Programs.
Drives me up the wall that program. :(

I watched the programme last night and whilst it was ok, it ddin't exactly bring out any new revelations...any defender worth his salt would have likely artillery targets pre-registered and the programme seemed to fail to mention the fact about the DD Shermans being launched too far from the shore in spite of British advice.....
Wouldn't a few tanks on comnig ashore at least made a bit of difference?
As well as their offensive capability the troops would have been able to advance behnid them.....

I thought pretty much the same...yet another of those 'Tonight for the first time we reveal...'-type programmes which leave you thinking :confused::confused:...

I notice that Professor Trew quickly scotched the idea of the Maisy Battery causing problems at Omaha Beach, but it was nonetheless a very interesting piece of military archaeology which I'd certainly like to visit if I'm in the area.....
