How do you go about finding out if someone was in the war.We asked my dad but he woun`t say anything. He passed away 5 years ago and someone gave me photos of him and his brother and sister, can anyone tell me what suit their wearing, heres a photo. My dad is the one on the right. Thank you. joanne
Hard to tell from the pic, it is so small. I'm guessing that is the original size of the photo. All I can do is speculate. I can see unit patches on the shoulders but cannot make them out. The man on the right looks like he is wearing an officer's Service Cap with 50 mission crush, making me think he is Army Air Force, but don't hold me to it. It could be some cold weather cap with the sides pulled up, it is so hard to tell. I thought at first that the discoloration on the right arm of the man on the left, below the lighter unit patch, could be out of focus sgt stripes, which would not have matched the Service Cap he may be wearing, but I think that it is just a blip in the photo, similar to the blip in the center of his chest. There are some guys here that are knowledgeable about how get info from the gov't. I am sure they will be by soon to help you. Which one is your father?
Ike, Thanks. I tried expanding on my machine but it lessened the resolution of it. I was hoping the original was larger, but I have a strong feeling that it isn't.
Hello Joanne, What is your father's country of origin? That might help in directing you to the correct organization. The uniforms look British or Canadian to me.
Same for me. It looks like the kaki green used in the RCAF or RAF. The one on the left seems to be an officer (P/O ?) . If he has wings on his chest pocket it would mean he is a P/O but with the low resolution it's impossible to see. The one with the cap could be a Sgt (quite often these "lower" ranks were gunners). In this case he should have a single wing on his pocket with A.G. as an inscription. Joanne could you scan a higher resolution picture for us, so we could have alook at the ranks and positions?
So the RCAF lead could be correct. Could you tell us his name ? then I could check my RCAF files. I you don't want to post it, you can send me a pm, but if you post it more people will be able to help.
Joanne, The RCAF will have an archive. You can contact them directly if the guys here can't help you out. The very best of luck.
