103rd Infantry WWII New Georgia

I'm guessing that you are referring to Norman & Glenn Halvorson who are my great uncles. As far as I know, they have no relatives in RI. Sorry to hear about your back surgery. May you have a swift recovery.

 

I hope some of you people are still around on this thread because I think you may have the answers I need.

I am looking for any information on Company F of the 103rd in 1943. My cousin Pvt. Sherrell Gann was KIA on July 1. I have read the history of the 43rd division book linked a few posts up but it does not mention F co. Do any of you have access to pictures from Fort Ord, CA? That is where he would have been placed in the 103rd.

 

Usually, Division histories don't mention units much below the regimental level. Sometimes they may mention a battalion, but that's about it. To find references to specific companies, you would need a regimental history. Unfortunately, they are very difficult to find and are usually very expensive.

On 1 July 1943, the 43rd would have been in the Solomon Islands participating in the New Georgia campaign.

I should clarify my previous comments about division histories. I did not mean to say that they never mention specific companies. They may do so for specific battles or actions, but that is usually the exception. Regimental or battalion histories (if you can find them) usually do a better job of documenting the companies. However, I've found that this can depend on who is writing the history.

If you are looking for specific info about your cousin, you may want to request his IDPF (Individual Deceased Personnel File) which may give you some clues. It won't provide a narrative account of what happened to him, but it may provide some details that will be helpful in continuing your search.

The Eisenhower Presidential Library (EPL) has about 6 boxes of documents on the 103rd Infantry Regiment. Unfortunately, they don't have a summary of what the documents online. You could contact them and request a summary of the 103rd documents. If it's all stuff from New Guinea or the Philippines, you'll know it won't help you too much.

I know this is an old thread but I'm seeking information on the 43rd Cavalry Recon Troopers in the South Pacific. My father was John Steve Moses. I'm posting entries from his service journal at www.frozenprose.com and I'm trying to fill in some blanks, particularly full names of those he was writing about. I can be contacted through that website or at johnrmoses@yahoo.com. The blogs contain photos, many without IDs.

 

I don't think I've posted here before. I put my father's service journal online at www.frozenprose.com. He went from Camp Shelby to Fort Ord to New Z, New Caledonia, and all the other garden spots. He was shipped home just before the Philippines campaign. There are several photos, some of which he took and developed in the jungle from a Brownie box camera that's still on a shelf above my desk. He was a Recon Trooper.

 

I'm going to look for a book I just learned of about the 43rd Cav. Recon Troopers written, I'm told, by a Capt Doll and his son, which is supposed to be on sale at the museum at Camp Blanding in Florida.
My Dad wrote about an officer with a similar name.
Has anyone out there seen this book?
