Here's some pictures that I took last fall in Berlin... you can see the soviet memorial, the jewish memorial, checkpoint charlie... If you are interested you can see them here http://cf.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/warrior_del/album?.dir=/cd3b&urlhint=actn,ren%3as,10%3af,0 and for those of you who ever went to Berlin...just a little souvenir
Very nice. I've been to Berlin several times. Of interest, if I'm not mistaken, on your first picture showing the Russian Palace, to the right is one of the lamp posts designed by Albert Speer. There are still a few of them around the city. My friend and I walked all around the Reichstag and noticed that all of the potmarking by artillery and bomb fragments have been repaired. You see a lot of square and rectangular patches where the damage used to be. Hermann Goring's Air Ministry building is still intact and has been used since the war by the government, east and unified Germany. The road running in front of it is Wilhelms Strasse of course and the cross street immediately to the south used to be Prinz Albrecht Strasse. On the south side of that street remains one of the only large sections of the Berlin Wall. Behind it is where the Gestapo Headquarters were. Behind the Air Ministry building is one that the German parliment uses. During the Third Reich it was used by Goring as the place where Luftwaffe officers used to stay when in Berlin for their decorations, etc., called Haus der Flieger. I enjoyed seeking out and finding the locations of many of the buildings used by Hitler's Reich. I'll have to find my photos and post them... Bob
You are right, the Reichstag has been repair and they did a really good job. Everywhere in the city you could see theses littles squares spots on the buildings, and it is very interesting cause Berlin seem to be one of the only city that has been damaged to attemps to cover all the trace. If you take some northern France city like Rouen, you can still see the bullet holes on the buildings, you can still stick you finger in it.It is about the same thing in Prague but in Berlin, the bullet hole seems to be rare for a city who was under a so intense fire. I find the area near the Altes museum still damaged, in fact this is the only area were you can see that there was a intense fight. Talking of the Air Ministry, this building was barely undammaged and it is still today one of the only Nazi architecture building still risingin Berlin and even in Germany. I don't know if the expo on the other side of the street was open when you were there, but this expo stand on the remains of the prisons on Prinz-Albrecht Strasse. It is very interesting and if you don't have see it...it worth it. Nice to talk with about this great city What a wonderful turnover they made
Interesting to have a Soviet memorial in Berlin of all places. I hope to visit Germany someday and see some of the historical sites.
Great pics Platton. The "Russian Palace" is infact the old East German Parliament Building - the Palace of the Republic. You might also find my Berlin Photos site interesting. Treptower Park is a must - a massive Soviet War Cemetery, built from the remains of Hitlers Chancellery. Also the Karlshorst Museum where the German Surrender was signed. Treptower Statue Click on Pictures and go to the "Nazi Era" section. Berlin Photos Berlin is a fascinating city not just for the WW2 history, but Cold War too. While I'm here I'll plug my book too! Thanks... I didn't had the chance to visit the Treptower Park, but it seems interesting. Actually, I don't know when but I will for sure go back to Berlin one days and I won't miss it. Thank you
