Hello, I'm new to this forum, having found it whilst attempting to research the war in the area of France in which I now live. I've been able to read many posts on this forum whilst waiting for a previous attempt to register to happen, and I look forward to participating.

Hi and thanks! Yep, it really is a nice place to live. Believe it or not, in the three years since I've lived here I haven't visited the tank museum? I pass by it frequently, and I'm always directing guests there. I really should make the effort and see it for myself!

Thanks again all. I certainly intend to get up to the museum sometime soon. I know the wife won't thank me for dragging her around the place, so I'll bribe her with the promise of shopping! We've just been too busy with this place to be honest, and you all know how time marches inexorably on?

I do know that there was quite a bit of resistance activity in our area, and there are memorials to that effect all over the place. I've passed by the Henry Buckmaster memorial just south of Le Mans many times, but never managed to stop by it. There are also many of the 'Road To Victory' bollards scattered around the place, which are always a joy to see. Quite locally to us is the memorial to a downed Mosquito, with pilot and navigator killed in 1944. Just north of Le Mans is a quaint little Musée de Seconde Guerre Mondiale, with an anti-aircraft gun as gate guard and one of the Road To Victory bollards too. Trouble is, each time I've been, it's been closed.

I do aim to be up in Normandy this June 6th though, anyone else going to be up there?

 

No hurry here, but if you a chance to get a few pictures of some of these local memorials, they would be a nice addition to our new picture galery.

 

No problems Skipper, it'd be a pleasure. I must remember that I'm supposed to live 'la vie francaise', and slow down and take the time out for these things!

One thing that always strikes me is how well tended these memorials are. Some of them are tucked away, but are still looked after. Respect, I think it's called.

 

It seems you already know quite a bit of real France . The Saumur museum is really worth going. The noise of the Tiger engine is something you"ll never forget.
Do you know that in June 1940 the Saumur cadets fought until the last bullet, including with WWI material and when the last survivors were finally captured they were congratulated by the Germans for their bitter fight and prison guards were given instuctons to give them good treatment. They have a monument at Saumur.

Thanks Otto, I have no idea why the registration never happened, but gladly, I persevered although re-registered under Le Chant instead. Don't worry about the other name - that's the nom de plume I use for my photography work. If you need to delete that registration, that's fine; I think I'll keep this one now, being as I've begun my forum 'life' already using it.
