So....Here I am, at work eating lunch, perusing websites, and Im over on the Panzer Museum website Panzermuseum.com - Panzermuseum News and I notice a news article entitled "Panzer 1 Returning to Aberdeen" heres the link: Panzermuseum.com - Tiger I Returning to Aberdeen What I noticed about the article was the bit that said: "In a bit of related news, Dr. Atwater also said that the Ordnance Museum would be moving from Aberdeen to Ft. Lee, Virginia. Everything - including the 16" coastal artillery gun and the German Leopold railway gun - will be moved there to a new 175,000 square foot facility the Army is planning to build. The move is scheduled to take place in 2009."
My thoughts exactly.I was happy for just that, then they go and move the Museum to within 4 hours of my house!
I'd love to go there once...but its that really annoying distance where its too long to drive but too short to fly...
Hi Keystone, i'd heard several years ago, that there was a "move" of sorts, that was going to lead to some of these vehicles being moved to the Patton Tank Museum but, I guess they never got around to it? Anyway, i'm glad they are finally getting smart about preserving these items. I wonder what the Army did with Atomic Annie?
Have any members ever visited Aberdeen? I've considered it for years but never went. Their website is rather vague in regards to whats indoors if anything worthy. I know most of the armor is outside & looks rather pathetic being exposed to the elements & generic paint schemes. It's a shame for these relics as you'd think in this day & age someone in charge could appreciate their historical value, even the monetary value too. I mentioned in another thread about the Tiger being refurbed at a local shop & i stopped down yesterday to get some pics. It was locked up, torn apart awaiting a Cummins powerplant as the parts for the original were scarce & pricey aledgedly. I know one of the guys who's working on it & i told him to give me a call when work resumes & when they're ready for a test spin.
Heres some pix I took about 10 years ago. I had a bunch from the exhibits inside but still searching for them. It'll only let me upload 5 on this post . I've created an album and put the others in there out Dan
This thread is quite old, but I had these pics so I'll send them along. Atomic Annie is on display at Ft Sill OK.
